It's time for me to dedicate some time to that classic of magic, the old Cups & Balls....

I think the routine is perfect for learning sleights, coupled with patter and misdirection, seems to be a good all rounder for starting.

Now my question is as follows:

Where did you learn your routine?

What routine would you recommend?

And Lady of Mystery, I'm already planning on using the one in Mark Wilson's for a starting point (just trying to see if i can beat you to it )

ye olde 2 or 3 cups and balls or chop cup?

Well i was thinking of doing the three cup, then two, then finally chop cup, in that order....i think

Lots of people like using 2 and 3 balls with there routines, just love this old time magic routine, that has been around for over 4000 years apparently!!

The late, great Mr Tommy Wonder had probably the finest cups and balls routine. His was the first routine that I ever performed but sadly I decided to desist performing that variation as I was just unable to do justice to the great man.

Agreed, it is a stunning version and one i love to watch even now.

I think I've mentioned this before, but I still think John Mendoza's Chop Cup and Ball routine is a brilliant routine - especially for those whose sleight of hand is not as strong since it does away with all the f*lse tr*nsf*rs. It is well structured and builds to a great finish. An excellent and underrated routine to my mind.

Learned chop cup from a wonderful magician in Mechanicsburg, PA in 1977!

Bruce Elliott gives a good teaching of the Cups And Balls in The Classic Secrets Of Magic. A nice short but fairly thorough description that is a pleasure to read.

I really love Bill Malone's routine, I've performed it a few times and it always gets really good reactions.
