Cheers Garry,

Suppose £25 notes ain't too bad, I'm just trying to work out whether i can get enough mileage out of the deck to justify the spend!

Probably not to be honest.

I own this deck and as soon as I had it I instantly regretted spending the money. For me, who wants to read minds rather than do 'magic tricks', cards are there to provide a large selection of different things. Choose a card (one of 52) - look at it - I can tell what you are thinking, for example. The 1 in 52 chance is one of the things that makes it effective.

There are lots of ways to achieve this, and lots of ways to present the effect(s). This is just one, but it has certain limitations and one of those is the cost!

St*ack a deck and learn a f*rce - then you'll be able to do the sorts of things that the Mind Power Deck helps with.

But sure, if you want to perform Smoke then you'll need it. I personally think that Smoke is a very clever trick that Derren performed very well on TV and on his own DVD, but it's very much his style and there are other practical issues you may face, such as not being allowed to light a cigarette indoors and so on.

You might find it fun and interesting to take the principle of the deck, which you clearly must know if you know about Smoke, and translate it to some other non-card type of selection process. Photos would be the obvious, rather lazy option. There will be others.

No doubt Mr Kennedy would disagree but I'm go with "not really"
Have they started doing MPDs with bicycle backs yet? I always saw this is a bit of an issue.

Yes, they actually started selling those ages ago. I have a deck I bought years back.
And it certainly was an issue, although ISTR Derren had a way to cope. I don't *think* he used Bicycle cards on TV - in as much as you couldn't tell what they were.

Guess I've not looked in a while then.
Derren just slapped a bike joker on the top of the deck and never made a big thing about it; on the DVD at least, can't recall on the TV show.

Ah yes, that rings serious bells!
I don't remember about the Stephen Fry TV part, either :)

I think 'Smoke' is a great trick but to me it seems a bit outdated now. Firstly, smoking is not allowed in pubs and bars. Secondly, though, I think attitudes to smoking have changed and some people might be offended if you light up in front of them, particularly if you don't ask them whether they mind or not beforehand.

Any fuss over the backs not being bikes is purely a magician thing. Especially as bikes aren't the cards we get in the UK. And even if they were laymen don't know these things.

As for the MP deck - it is overpriced IMO but Derren has shown that with some thought a good routine can be made from it. Rather than copy him why not think of your own?

Other similiar decks worth looking at are the Radar deck & the Mastermind deck.

As I remember it, the problem with the back wasn't so much that they weren't Bikes but they were so garish with that 'Sun' motif, they drew unnecessary attention to the deck.

As usual you won’t be surprised to hear that we’ve discussed this item several times before. OK the Search function isn’t the best thing since sliced bread but it does work – sort of!
