Club night ideas...

Postby MagicAL » Jul 6th, '05, 22:21

Hi All, I am a member of a small but growing magic club. We meet every other thursday, in a private room at a pub and have a great time. We have a magic dealer who always demos stuff to us and gives us honest opinions (always handy) along with some full time pros who help us mortals out with anything we are struggling with.

Anyhow, weeks that we dont have lectures or anything particular to do, the meeting seems to loose structure. And people start to leave or go the bar earlier and earlier.

We need some ideas for club nights, and I was hoping that as there are so many magicians here that you guys might have some suggestions.

I will start the ball rolling...

"Desert Island tricks" - Members get to demo there current favourite effect etc. The one trick they would always perform if asked to show one trick etc.

Any other ideas chaps? Lets brainstorm!

Or you could have any one of a few groups of tricks, e.g.

- Ace trick night

- Color Change trick night

- XCM night

- AC Routine night

and so on.

Or you could just agree to have each member demo a full, say 10 min, routine on 'his' night. That way each person gets to show off their skills, and everyone gets to comment :).

Great suggestions! Anything that can get us doing stuff that we would not normally do has gotta be a good thing!

Blimey, what if we did a night where no cards where allowed? I would not know what to do?

Come on, let's have some more! :D

A lame trick night for those tricks that are usually to embarrasing to admit that you all bought

How about going out onto the street and performing to real specs as a competition to see who can perform the trick that gets the biggest reaction. Good experience as well as fun.

Lame trick night! Hmmm think we had one of these the other week when we had a bring and buy evening, amazing all the cr*p that everybody has bought over the years, even more interesting to see that a lot of us all brought along identical items!

I guess we already perform to laypeople in the bar. Well I try to perform for the new bar maid, no luck as of yet! :D

Blimey, what if we did a night where no cards where allowed?

1) If your members are up for it, why not have just such a night? The idea would be to encourage them to go find something non cardie and be ready to perform it reasonably well in time for the next session. It might stretch a few folks but they may also benefit from the enforced thinking outside their favourite routines. And if they make a pig's ear of it then nothing will have been lost!

2) How about deciding in advance on a selection of ordinary items which will be on a table and challenge them to think up something 'new' and impromptu which they could do with such objects. Keys, bottle tops, marbles, pencils and so on will be easily located for practice as well as 'on the night'.

3) Perhaps themed nights such as mathematical or rope only effects might provide some different amusement?

4) As you're in a pub - how about drinking effects or only those sort of effects which involve liquids, glasses and jugs?

5) If you have or can get hold of Paul Zenon's 100 Ways to win a Tenner ( http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic1580.p ... paul+zenon ) then there should be enough in there to make a great night!

Loving it, loving it, loving it!

It would be a real challenge for me and some others to learn an effect without cards. I would have to presuade others very strongly though!

"100 ways to win a tenner" yep got that. Maybe have a bar tricks evening? Stuff that borders on magic etc?

Come on guys lets hear them all! I want to be able to go back with a huge list of ideas! :D

Mandrake, they are still f***ing ballons  And the best use for them is to get the kids to fall out and fight each other at your mates Xmas party 8) Stopped me being asked to do kids stuff at friends parties :P he he he

MagicAl, What about an Ad Lib night where everyone draws a topic out of a hat and has 10 mins to devise a trick in that topic be it mentalism, ropes, TT, chemical magic, sword swallowing or whatever

Don't forget to use a billet switch to make sure you get the best trick to do though 8)

Having spent weeks selling raffle tickets in my local club, on the night I was asked to pull the winning ticket out of the bag, Oooh it was so tempting

How about a "bring and trade" evening where members bring all their back-of-the-drawer tricks and trade them around? I'm sure everyone has some effects which they never use :)?

(Not my idea...was in another post here)

Kati - you'll notice that the thread you linked to was actually written by MagicAL, the original author of this thread, so I imagine he's had that idea already! In fact, if you read this thread properly, you'll see it's actually mentioned, by MagicAL, just a few posts in!
