Quick Change Routine

Postby Aza » Oct 9th, '12, 22:24

Guys, guys, guys!! oops and girls!

*warning post contains gratuitous references to women and refers to women as objects, for those easily offended please know I'm not really sexist*

I have two gorgeous women who want to work on a quick change act with me, now i know you lot will moan at me for not focusing on magic, but screw that i have two beautiful girls who wish for me to undress them quickly on a stage!!

Anybody point me toward a good starting reference for this?

I know it's not really magic, but i kind of wanted to boast about the pretty girls bit

Much love

David and Dania are classed as the world's number one quick change act - Youube has loads of their routines on file - and they also sell stuff as well. In the UK Keelan Leyser and Charlotte Marie are top notch and have developed into international stars of quick change. Magic features heavily in their alternative acts as well.

Unfortunatly there's not all that much out there on quick change for women, most of the books only deal with men. I've not read it but I've heard that Lex Schoppi's Quick Change volume 2 has some thoughts on women's costumes (his first book is also very good and although it doesn't deal with women, it'll give you the basic ideas).

I've played around a little with quick change so am happy to help if I can, I'm no expert though.

Cheers guys!

I have a basic understanding of how the changes work, i just wondered if there was a nice little resource for costume making etc.

We have a good four months to rehearse before the holiday camp season starts and we are going to try and get ourselves in with a friend of mine at one of the big chain holiday camps for starters.

Becky, if you don't mind PM'ing me, or i'll chat you on FB at some point to discuss it would be much appreciated!

Thanks again

Much love

On the contrary, I lack even the very basics understandings, but I would like to (because I'm incredibly curious and because quick change fascinates me). Can anybody point me to a resource to start with?

I have very good reasons not to answer this. One of the best involves my girlfriend sitting next to me and a kitchen knife

Miko, Lex Schoppi's first book is very good for the basics.

I don't know much about the mechanics of quick change other than the obvious advice of dressing in layers, but if these two girls want a seriously original act, they should do it without you (no offense, you can still help back stage, just wait to see where I'm going with it). The main role of the man in primarily female quick change routines is to hold up a sheet or a tube or an umbrella to cover the moment of the change, and if they can do that for each other it'd have more resonance.

There are very few female double acts in the world, even less in magic, and a quick change routine presented as two women getting ready for a party or trying on dresses in a shop or any easily parodied cliche of chick flick outfit montages would make serious waves.

A quick change for women is about 20 minutes.

:D

David and Dania gave a lecture at Blackpool a couple of years ago, showing how he added her costumes layer by layer, how they were held in place, how her dresses were long then short then long again. It takes up to an hour to get ready for their act, as you can imagine with all those layers they have to time it all so she isn't hanging around 'layered up' for too long otherwise heat exhaustion is a distinct possibility. David's contribution is often overlooked but he usually changes his suit once or twice, gloves change colour almost at will and I believe the waistcoat has been known to change at times.

Not that it matters much, but I second Stacy's idea. I find it brilliant.

I really love Stacy's thinking! There is no need for the tubes to be held up, when I did my routine I used fixed screens that I just walked behind. These can give you a few more options too, like changing from bikini to evening dress. I'll have a hunt through my notebooks and if I can find all the diagrams that I drew up, I'll let you have them along with the full routine.
