homemade Flash Effects?

Postby seymourmagic » Oct 15th, '12, 05:39

i read how to use a road flare and white spirits to make flash paper or flash cotton or flash string anyone ever tried such a thing? part of the instruction is to dry in an oven for 20 min. i dont want my oven to flash bang lol but if it works it could be a big money saver in the long run. do you know if this works at all?

People have asked this question before and the usual responses have been to not mess around with homemade flash as it can just be too dangerous and unpredictable. It's far safer to tick with the professionally produced stuff, which also isn't all that expensive.

This is a highly dangerous process and should be left to the experts

Home made pyrotechnics are always a risky enterprise!

DO NOT MAKE AT HOME!

It is stupidly dangerous and it's not even like it ends up being cost effective anyway!

I'm not a massive fan of my eyebrows but I would prefer that they stay on my face; so I stick to buying.

I would never attempt to make flash products at home.....the advice is good, leave it to the pro's!

I wouldn't take too much notice of any 'make your own flash paper' advice you found on youtube.

Professionally made flash papers are nitrocellulose based. The process is as difficult as it is simple even when you know what you are doing. If, you get it right, and don't blow your cooker and yourself to kingdom come, you are left with double base rocket propellent laying around the house which I wouldn't want. It's the stuff they use to kick-start ballistic missiles and 1000lb bombs. You can't dispose of the leftover residue by pouring it down the drain either. It's highly toxic. I happen to use Nitric Acid and cellulose in my work and am on a register.

Attempting to buy the chemicals necessary without good reason, would probably have the anti-terrorist boys and girls knocking at your door.

Home made paper no matter how good would only fizz at best and you'd end up with singed fingers or worse. Commercially made flash paper or gun-cotton burn in an instant without causing (mostly) any harm.
