IT question??

Postby JohnPyn97 » Oct 15th, '12, 17:27

Hi everyone, I couldn't find any suitable category to ask this so I thought I'd post it here^^
I was wondering if anyone knew if this thread here http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nylon-Clear-Inv ... iscussions was good for the sole purpose of doing magic. I've never really tried any IT until today I read some reviews and found out that apparently it's really invisible so I thought I'd give it a shot. If anyone can advise me a website on where to buy it that'd be really awesome as long as they ship to Italy^^ Thanks a lot in advance^^

That didn't look like the right IT for magic to me, it looked white, my IT is black, you should try an online magic store I dont know about shipping to Italy, I suggest doing a google on it, sorry i couldn't be of more help.

I bought some of this (from John Lewis) to repair my Dual Control gimmick. It's just about right for that, if you keep it moving, but it's too thick for the sort of jobs that magicians normally expect of IT and yes, it is white.

The color can be corrects by using a classic magic wand (a.k.a. Sharpie) but you don't want to use just one color, a combination of short black lines broken up with purple and blue will work better because it breaks up the line and too, the blue & purple are a light frequency that's difficult for the eye to actually view let alone follow when broken up in this manner.

Oh! This thread is the weight we used to use and think to be so wonderful back in the day, we didn't have the ultra-thin super strong strands you guys have access to now days unless we relied on actual human hair.

I was once assured that the reason magicians employ lovely lady assistants with long luxurious hair is to ensure a continual and ever ready supply of IT!

I thought it came from nylon stockings.

I think the info I was given predates nylon stockings, possibly towards the end of the 1800s timescale. There's an Old Forum thread somewhere describing how nylon stockings can be a great source of very low cost IT.

Horse hair is too stiff and thick to serve as IT

Mandrake is correct, the long hair of a young lady was the original IT and has withstood the test of time, given that it was still the thing to use well into the 1950s and 60s as the monofilament and nylon type threads had yet to be developed (another gift of the post war era); human hair & black thread were the standard for centuries, it seems.

The use of Panty Hose strands started in the mid-70s if I remember correctly and then came "wooly nylon" in the 1990s (a.k.a. elastic IT).

I'm aware of a new thread that is slated to hit the market sometime in the next couple of years, that's actually made from the saliva of a particular fish (I want to say the "Lung Fish"), a strand half the thickness of a human hair can move over 50 lbs in direct weight . . . it's probably going to be bloody expensive at first but can you imagine the things we'll be able to get away with  This is the sheep & spider DNA based fibers look to be the most promising for the next generation of IT because of their strength.
