Card Spin

Postby Replicant » Jul 10th, '05, 21:06

I've been practicing card spins and after spending several hours continuously spinning cards on my middle finger, I am now quite proficient at this. But I can only perform it consistently well with my right hand. I am left-handed but cannot seem to get the card to spin very well using my left hand. Oz Pearlman explains how to do it on the Starry Eyed Surprise II explanation video, albeit briefly. Can anyone recommend any techniques for perfecting this? It is quite frustrating that I only seem to be having trouble with one hand but not the other. Any videos would also be appreciated, so I can see how others perform this nice flourish.

It's done exactly the same way. You will find that one hand gets the spin much quicker than the other. I'm afraid there's probably no quick fix (If there is, I wanna hear it! Hehe), just practice, and more practice.

You think you got it bad? I can't overhand shuffle correctly. I do left hand into right hand. AND when I spread the cards, I spread from right to left. Just something I've done since being a kid... now I'm having to teach myself to fan the cards correctly (to work with breaks/forces/etc)... gutted.

It is weird that it is easier to do on one hand than the other. It's the same with me. I'm right handed and can do it better on my left hand! The opposite to you.

To be honest, it may seem impressive to you but to laymen, they don't find it too impressive.

This is more of a convincer rather than a flourish. e.g. After a colour change, you can perform it to show that it is a singular card (assuming that you know colour changes that end with a singular card).

Again, PRACTICE!!!!!

Bicycle,

Despite my previous ramblings about flourishes, and people spending more time learning how to control the cards, I do a card spin, and it does go down very well with Joe Public.

I only do it with one hand, I don't see the need to be able to do it with both :?

If I can help PM me, but it did take a while to master :? Without giving too much away, it is the version where you spin the top card of the deck upwards, and catching it takes as much practice as flipping it

It really does get 'Wows' in the pub though.

Don't think so Tenko...he means the one where you spin the card on the middle finger - never leaves your hand.

The Spinner is another good move - gets your cards all dirty when you drop them though :).

I have not yet succeeded in this trick, but when I do ill let you know, I can do it with a ball hehe. I think it’s just the weight, balance and yet practice that you need but I keep failing.

I've been practicing hard and I'm slowly getting the knack of using my left hand. My right-handed card spin is now getting very good - I can sometimes get it to spin for about five seconds before coming to a stop. Doesn't sound like very long, but feels good when I pull it off and looks cool.

I seem to recall seeing a video of someone performing the card spin at a phenomenal rate - getting it to spin very fast for a very long time. If anyone can point me in the direction of this video, I would be grateful. Thanks for the replies so far.

If you do this with an Ace, it looks like the pips vanish :).

Syd Segal uses this illusion in Gaft Card Magic, then shows that the pips have really vanished - great trick and the color change is spectacular if you can do it (which I can't).

I could but I can't do the color change so have to resort to the DL method, which is good for laymen but a bit pointless for anyone in the know.

might be depressing to you, but may well be worth it to otheres who see this as a welcome flourish in card magic.
