What to do with half a deck?

Postby artychris » Oct 6th, '12, 13:13

There's one trick that I do a lot that needs about 20 gimmicked cards, and they sit at the bottom of the deck and re-set pretty much automatically.

However, by the nature of it, the top 30 or so cards just don't get touched.

So I'm looking for ideas of things that I can do with the top 30 cards (well, maybe not all of them) I'll happily put in more gimmicked cards...

Any thoughts as to what would sit in the top (or middle) of a deck, and look completely natural? Also when performed wouldn't interfere with the bottom bit of the deck?

Ideas would be much appreciated :) Thanks!

That depends on the other effect to maximise the continuity and power of the routine. What is the effect?

The effect that's already in the deck is Strange Travelers...

However, I'm not really looking for a routine here (although if there is something that ties in nicely...)

I'm more thinking of one offs, so I have a deck stacked and loaded and ready to go with two or three amazing things that are completely different. And as Strange Travelers is so heavily gaffed, I figured why not gaff the rest of the deck.

You could set the top half of the deck up for Further than That.

Do half a trick...

No, in honesty, have the following set-up

Card
Indifferent but completely visually different card
Duplicate of top card.

ie. 6 of Spades, King of Hearts, 6 of Spades.

Do a D/L showing the K, turn the double back over and take the top card, place it down on the table face down under a glass or something (In reality one of the 6's)
Do another D/L, showing the other 6, and switch for the king by turning it back over. wave the card over the card under the bottle and show it's changed to the king.

Let them realise about the card under the glass,

Then they look under the glass and see that's changed as well.

The great thing is, you are now one-ahead for a super clean first phase ambitious card routine. Simple place the 6 in the middle of the deck and do a DL to make it jump to the top of the deck.

Thanks for all the ideas and input all! Much appreciated!

I went out and bought Mark Wilsons book (Further Than That gave me an excuse to get a book I'd been meaning to get for ages!) It's a rather good trick, and certainly different enough to Strange Travelers!

And I certainly like the idea of the top deck stack as suggested to! Superb!

I'm wondering if I can squeeze anything else into this deck now!!!

Any more ideas? :)

There is much that can be done with but half a deck of cards, in fact I'd go as far to say that almost any trick can be done with a half deck if some thought is put into the process. A selected card to impossible location, a production of four aces to name but two. So long as any shuffle retains the bottom stock I can't think of much that can't be done.
