Questions for Working Magicians

Postby Jing » Nov 1st, '12, 12:47

Hey,

I'm just wondering what others do regarding gigs that they can't do?

It's possible that I may be moving to another part of the country, and I believe that I will still get a fair few enquiries for the area I live in now. If it's close up, then fine I'll do them but for a kids show where the fee is lower (and could be doing bookings locally), it would be too far to take the bookings.

Options as I see it.
Try to run some sort of agency - which means more work, advertising and trying to get even more enquiries as I don't think I'll have hundreds coming through.
I know some people who run an 'events company' except it's just them and their friends and it's not really an events company, it's just that they have formed a group of magicians and then target bigger companies - any thoughts on this? Is anyone else here in a group of magicians who market themselves together rather than being just a single magician?
A lot of my work is private parties, and I've been trying to get into corporate bookings, but they seem only to book through agents and then they won't ever respond to calls. So setting up your own company seems like a way around that, but I'm not sure.

Pass them on to a friend and ask for a commission - I do know about postgigs and I'm signed up to the children's entertainer section but I've seen one gig listed in about a year - I don't think the close up section is the same, but that seems confined to a 'select few' who share the work between themselves.

Pass them on and don't ask for a commission which seems the easiest, and in theory what you get back is good fortune and good karma (which are nice things too).

Any options I've missed.

Your thoughts would be good thanks.

You can always posts in the gigs section of TMUK, and another option is to find out about other magi's in your 'current' area and maybe see them at work. You would then know who is most apt to pass on work to.

Being generous towards other people is always a good opportunity to find out more about them. You are moving away. Pass the gigs on free and see how they all respond.

You may get free drinks at magic conventions. Suprise magical gift through the post? Or absolutely nothing at all.

It'll give you food for thought.

I was caught in that position about four years ago. I just passed on the gigs to mates in the old location. Never bothered with anything in return. I didn't want to run an agency, and I do like passing gigs on to my friends.
