Hello all - just making myself known after a few weeks of enjoyable lurking.

I'm Matt, 36, from Kent, UK, and possibly a bit old to be getting seriously into magic - but that ain't gonna stop me!
I'm a journalist and also sing for a rock band on weekends (in fact, I often wonder about weaving in a little magic into the act - any ideas?)

I've always been fascinated by the subject and collected many tricks since my first stripper deck bought in Canterbury market when I was nine.

Now I'm rapidly becoming obsessed and Penguin's shares must have gone up three-fold.

Guess I always thought I'd never have the patience/dexterity/time to learn the cool stuff but I seem to be proving myself wrong now.
I'm currently working through Born To Perform, with a copy of Royal Road as back-up (have to admit, that book DOES test my patience!!)
I've dabbled with TTs for years and Darwin's DVD is opening up a few possibilities there too.

I'm also having a bit of fun with the Silver Bullet lite.

Anyways - that's me, just wanted to say hi and respect to you all - thanks for an entertaining, informative forum. Hope I'll be able to contribute in a meaningful way soon.

PS: By the way, how do you do the.............................

The answer must be practice, now what was the question :-)

Welcome to the forum. Can't wait to see how you use the magic and music together,

Vic

Hello, and welcome to TalkMagic!

Too old? Don't be a fool, man. I would suggest you use the phrase 'Mature Student' ;)
Possible magic to weave into your rock act would involve rather fancy flourishes/productions. Search 'Jeff McBride'.

WOW! You got a stripper when you were 9? Mine was my 21st birthday!
OH! Sorry, you meant a 'wizard' deck

Search: CUPS... I think you're a sufferer.

Well, you certainly seem to be taking it seriously. Persevere with the Royal Road, bear in mind it's literal style is quite old, but the foundations learned in there are still almost compulsary learning for card magi.

Good, innit :D A wonderful, understated mentalism tool.

You just have!

Easy... It's a double ***** followed by an aadvark sh****, take out the **** and add some *****. Shuffle for a while, and hey presto, you've just done your first *** ****** ****.

You don't have to be mad to lurk here, but it helps

Welcome to TM, You’re never too old to take part in magic, take Paul Daniels as an example, and please enjoy your stay.

Hawk - I think he meant too old to start out in magic...

Anyway...

Glad to see you around and only rarely do we see such a great introduction post. Welcome to talkmagic.

Many thanks for the warm welcome guys - I was already in love with this place.

Cheers Seige, given the nature of the act (hard rock/punk) I'm thinking of knife through arm, a bit of fire and a nice levitation at the moment!
Mind you, the latter would probably involve disclosure to at least the drummer - and drummers should never have knowledge about anything.

And, yes, I am an Alice Cooper fan.

Oh yes, I've known that since the day I found this site, without ever finding out what it stands for! I've spent a stupid amount at Penguin and The Magic Gadget in the last couple of months. Even though I won't get round to some of the stuff for ages. At least I know it's there, waiting for me. Mmmmm.

It's painful but I will. Haven't the publishers thought of a DVD version?? Oz is giving me a nice intro which will give me a few routines to play with before it gets really heavy. I'm not even close to happy with my DLs yet.

I resent that! Being a drummer, hehe... Well actually I play guitars/keyboards and sing, too. Drummer primarily, tho! =o)

I'm a complete partisan of "Born to Perform" as anyone who read my review would know. I find the way he teaches the stuff very un-patronising. He doesn't go over-board with repetitions, too. Some people will repeat a move like 5 or 6 times, slowly (I call that simply "filler").

As for the DL, practice.. practice.. practice! It's a killer move, and one which you will need for many tricks. Probably my favourite move =o)

Welcome to TM! =oP

Too right never tell a drummer anything it only complicates matters  .
Maybe you could saw the drummer in half and put him on two drum kits.

Mind you one drummer is bad enough but you'd have twice the chance of him keeping in time for once.

How can you tell when a drum risers level? The drummer dribbles from both sides of his mouth.
