Hi all,

Just giving a quick update on my current situation, i have made the decision to be a full time working magician and a friend of mine who owns an entertainment agency (mainly singers like Michael Buble tributes etc.) has given me the opportunity to perform at a very prestigious event, where the company will hand pick the entertainment for the coming year.

They don't normally have magicians, but we think it will offer them something a bit different that may interest them.

Now i have my close-up/table routines that i am happy with, but I'm toying with the idea of doing something on the stage involving a few spectators, could anybody give me any ideas of something that plays well to a big crowd but isn't too technically challenging, i don't have the time to learn any new sleights or complicated mentalism scripts, but just something "big" i can do that requires a good bit of presentation. I have a pick pocket routine that i am working on, and have had some success using it close up, but i don't think it will play "big" any ideas?

Some sort of easy mentalism lie detection effort?
Forcing deck or bag.

A chair prediction or Sneak Thief were two that popped into my head which I've always found to go down well and don't have to be particularly difficult.

My gut feeling is that you should not perform on the stage. Stick to the close up. This is a prestigious event which could do you a lot of good in the future. You really should keep clear of any adventures like this. Nothing wrong with trying uncharted waters but do it at a minor event. We all have to learn somewhere but trying out stuff that you have not performed before at a major event may well be disastrous and ruin the potential for future bookings from that source. And it wouldn't do any good for your friendship with the agent.

Stick to what you are comfortable with and that is the close up magic. Plenty of time to develop a stage act. This event is not the place to do it.

Whats your deadline Aaron?

2 weeks from now you might see some stuff that interests you...

A Russian roulette routine always plays well as a stage closer!!! That's how I'm closing my stage show at the moment!! With a more tame (friendly) encore if I think it's worthwhile!

Thanks for the words of wisdom and encouragement, and i think maybe Mr Mark Lewis has hit the nail on the head....maybe i'll steer clear of the stage and stick to my close-up for now....

Although there are some really interesting ideas here that i could look into for the future!!

Agree Aaron. There is a get out policy with close-up.. But on the stage if things do go wrong, there will be a lot of people looking at you If you get my drift? Anyway matey just do what you think is right on the day/night.. Most of all enjoy!!

Yes indeed. Better safe than sorry. I expect some of the more experienced members here will advise you likewise. You don't want to blow an opportunity because of premature eagerness. And in any event you can do without the extra pressure. You will have enough to worry about on the night.

Standing Ovation card trick as presented by the great Bill Malone. A total gem, getting a couple of audience members involved, great patter and presentation with a fantastic kicker at the end. Great stunning comedy piece of magic.
