Anyone else getting this problem...

Postby magician242 » Jan 4th, '13, 18:21

When using my ID I find that when spreading though the cards the edges of the "other" cards are slightly revealing themselves when I don't want them to. Its not so that you can see any of then back design but just enough so that the spectators can see there is another card behind it. It doesn't just happen with one card, there are quite alot cards that want to reveal themselves. I recently bought a new ID because my old one was getting to the point that the back design could be seen when I didn't want it to be. Although my new one is a lot better, I find myself applying pressure to then top of the spread to stop any unwanted cards revealing themselves. Its got to the point where I really can't stop the edges of cards coming out although not with the back design visible, I wouldn't mind but when I was showing the trick to a family member they guessed the method. So does any one else have this problem, do you find yourselves pushing down on the deck when spreading or is it just as natural as with a normal deck, or have I been unlucky and bought 2 rubbish decks off eBay, Although admittedly the second deck was much better than the first. I only realised this when my friend showed me the one he bought as I asked to see it and I couldn't see anything apart from slightly thick cards. And when I had a go I was spreading as if it was a normal deck. What do you think?

It is not the same as a regular deck. And I don't mean to sound mean, and I hate to use the word 'but' but it comes down to practice. You have to try using different amounts of pressure on the cards, not always more. And sometimes you have to work the deck a little bit. Although I believe that in this 'working' the deck what you are really doing is practicing and suddenly it works and we can use the excuse that it didn't work before because the deck was too new, when what it really is, is we were too new.

In my years I've used all different makes of ID and have rarely had a problem. If they are home made then there is a greater risk of the person not applying the 'special sauce' properly or evenly.

I find that when using RP to make an ID I need to packet the cards for a few days and then do a spread to lose any excess, and re packet again. in fact, for my first ID it took quite a while to handle it correctly. I wouldn't be bothered by slight shim showing as once you hit the jackpot card that's all forgotten.

As has been stated, pressure is all important when handling the ID. It's not unusual to find that too much pressure will cause the cards to seperate. Practice, vary the pressure that you're using and you may find the best to prevent seperation. In all honesty however, as long as the back designs of the partner cards aren't showing and it's only the white border, I'm not sure there's a problem. Your audience is very unlikely to notice anything out of the ordinary.
