Little guidance please?

Postby johnnyryanUK » Jan 26th, '13, 22:22

Hi there,

I have been into magic for say 8 months now. I am in a scenario of limbo. I don't know if I class myself as a magician or not. I perform to people mainly card magic but other types as well. I don't know if I feel confident enough to begin being creative because the current magic I do I don't know if it's good enough as I sort dip in and out of different books like RRTCM and MWCCM and Paul Zennons street magic.

Many thanks

Hi there.. Dale was right! You seem to do the things that are required of a magician. If you feeling brave enough, why not make a short video and post it on here? I am sure you will get positive feedback from a few. 8) Regard Garry.

Yeah just do a trick or two for friends and family. They aren't going to humiliate you if you get it wrong, and you can ask them what they think you can do to improve it.

Also what about the tricks do you feel isn't good enough?

The best thing you can do is to just get out an perform for people, I started out just doing magic for friends in the pub. Once you start performing you'll find that your confidence will grow.

There's nothing wrong with any of those books by the way, they contain some really strong material. A lot of my early paid gigs came out of Mark Wilson.

Hi, I recognise that feeling. I struggled with the label too for a while.

The key to owning it, for me, was that it wasn't just self-applied. I joined a magic soc and the other members accepted me as being a magician like them. My friends called me a magician. In some ways I was the last person to give in and agree I was a magician.

Part perhaps of the illusion is being an illusion ourselves. Accepting the part we play, and the name, is about joining in with the suspension of disbelief and being as amazed as our audiences.

Nicely said.

I had a discussion this weekend in which it was decided for someone to be in the proffession of a magician it is enough to have other people simply believe they are a magician, but this this does not always work for say, an accountant or a brain surgeon.

Unless you are out there looking for work as a magician then why label yourself? Do what you do and have fun with it. Your best judge if you are or are not good enough is your audience. Are they happy?

You don't need to put more pressure on yourself.

Now if you are looking for work as a magician then you pretty much have to label yourself to market yourself.
