Hi, I am new here so I wanted to post something...So the question is what sleights do you think every gambler should know?

As this site is purely for the use of sleighs in magic, I don't think we can be of help to gamblers. The use of any sleights would mean cheating and that's rather risky, especially where serious money is involved..

Get The Expert and The Card Table by S.W. Erdnase and make it your Bible.

And yeah, don't cheat, people won't take kindly to it. Use the sleights for tricks instead!

I didn't said that very clearly, so let me rephrase myself. I wanted to know what do you think is the basics of gambling sleights(false deal, false shuffle,shifts,palms,etc..)So I never meant to cheat I am only doing this for gambling routines purposes. I think I have made it clear now. I am asking this so I could know where to start. I hope you could help me.
Thanks in advance

See my previous post. The Expert at The Card Table is considered the book to get on that subject.

...and once you can handle a lot of the sleights as per Expert, have a look at the books by Darwin Ortiz.

Or Daniel Madison.

Daily practice?

Postby CardManipulator » Jan 28th, '13, 09:04

Here's another question about gambling sleights from me...What gambling sleights(again I mean false deals,shuffles,stacking,etc..)do you practice most?
I practice mostly false deals and I am interested how you practice them?

Well, how do you practise yours? I don't really do any false deals as I'm not into gambling tricks so I can't answer your question, but if you tell us how you practise, I'm sure some people here will tell you if you're doing anything wrong (although everyone practises in a way that suits them, to an extent).

Well because I just started 2 months ago I am practicing like Jason England says in Unreal Work 2....That's for the strike second, but for the bottom deal I just can't do it and I don't how to practice it...

Apart from the centre deal, the bottom deal is probably the most difficult card sleight to master. But to be honest, I can't think of a single magical effect that would justify learning it. It is useful in gambling demonstrations but there are plenty of gambling/poker card effects where you merely pretend to bottom deal, but don't actually do it. I would say (and this has been covered many times before) provided you learn the following card sleights, you can achieve nearly any magical effect with cards:

DL - palm - a force - a false shuffle - any card control (classic pass).

With just those five moves you can achieve 90 - 95% of what you'll find taught in books. You could also add into the mix a second deal and a top change. If you throw a decent stack into the mix then you'll be a card master in no time. You don't need to do knuckle busting sleights and flourishes. Armed with the above there are innumerable gambling demonstrations you can do. RRTCM has some. The Aronson approach has a cracking poker effect called paragon poker where you can deliberately perform an obvious bottom deal as part of the demonstration. There are many more out there!

Do you have any use in mind for the bottom deal?

I tend to learn sleights with a specific purpose in mind, i.e: because they constitute part of a trick I want to learn and subsequently perform to friends and family etc. (The RRTCM is excellent in this regard because each sleight it teaches is followed by a number of tricks you can do with it - I'm working through that book at the moment).

What kind of things do you want to achieve? If you have something to aim towards you can practise much more effectively I find. Rather than just half learning sleights, getting bored of them and moving on to different ones aimlessly. With a goal in mind you'll be able to focus a lot more.
