Derren Brown has undertaken some audacious stunts as part of his television shows for Channel 4, including attempting to convince a man that the world had been hit by a meteorite and taken over by zombies in Apocalypse.

In an interview with Gay Times, the illusionist hinted at perhaps tackling sexuality. "I was thinking about this the other day - it would be interesting wouldn't it? To take a gay guy and make him straight and a straight guy and make him gay."

Derren Brown is gay; he came out four years ago.

If this particular idea goes ahead, it's bound to be controversial. But it wouldn't be the first time Derren Brown has landed in hot water.

In 2010, media watchdog Ofcom launched an investigation into Channel 4's Derren Brown: Hero At 30,000 Feet following a scene portraying a man restrained by a straitjacket on a railway track.

Two years later, Derren Brown hit back at claims that the aforementioned Apocalypse was faked using an actor to be the subject of the illusion.

This feels fundamentally wrong on a huge number of levels, mostly to do with the fear that it might bolster the generally right wing view that one's sexuality is at it's heart a choice.

He's certainly getting further and further away from his beginnings - at least on TV. To be honest, at one time this may have been a very courageous type of topic to tackle but the question of being gay or not being gay is so old hat these days I'm just wondering exactly how many people will truly be interested. Whether someone is gay or not makes very little difference, there are so many other qualities which are far more important. Several of my friends are gay but it's not something of real importance, they have zillions of other qualities which make them true friends, great people and darned good mates. Nuf sed.

If this was an interview with Gay Times, he probably said it as a joke.
