Magic in The Sun

Postby Silkenone » Jul 19th, '05, 22:57

In my introduction thread, I said I was a journalist without 'fessing up to the fact I'm a sub-editor at The Sun.
I'm telling you now because I just had one of my most entertaining tasks at work yet - a spread on ten of the "greatest tricks" of the century!

Now, I didn't write it or choose the tricks (card on window?? Indian rope trick???) so don't judge a newbie.

But it is nice to see a magic feature in the nation's best-selling paper, celebrating a century of The Magic Circle.

And it was bloody great to work on it - nobody there even knows I'm interested in the subject! :P

No worries, just pleased to hear that the media are finally doing something to celebrate the MC Centenary. We asked the Beeb last year if they were planning anything and we're still waiting for their reply! Not being a regular reader, when does the spread appear in print? Definitely one to buy for posterity!

Nice one Silkenone.

Just out of interest though. Do you know how did they calculate ten of the greatest tricks of the century? (I assume we are talking the last 100 years and not just 2000 :) )

Can you publish the list here - or do we have to buy the Sun?

It's in today's edition - marking the day the Circle first met.

Yes, it's good to see. The fact that someone very high up at The Sun is a member could just have something to do with it! :D

Bananafish - it's a list of some of the illusions which have really made a big impression on the public over the years and a little about each performer. It's not meant to be definitive. They are listed one to 10, but that's more of a design thing than a ranking.
From memory, there's Houdini's Water Torture Cell, Blackstone Jr's floating light bulb, Banachek's bullet catch (with big mention for Penn and Teller's double version), Lance Burton's doves, Copperfield's Death Saw (of course!), Blaine's card in the car window, a couple from Robert Harbin, Siegfried and Roy (elephant vanish) and Karachi's attempt to get 500 guineas from the MC with his film of an Indian rope trick.

There are pictures of each performer too - buy your copy today!
