Max Maven Contimental

Postby Johnny Bravo » Jun 9th, '13, 20:59

I've always liked this effect since I first came upon it many moons back on Max Mavens Videominsd Phase Three, Talkmagic review here - ftopic44335.php" target="_blank

It's a lovely effect, real easy, just requires a little crib card & your away :-)

Briefly, you ask someone to think of any European country & then appear to pull the letters from their mind as you state the country.
However, there are certain European countries you want to steer your punter away from or the effect will fail, as the effect as on the DVD was around 2002 some countries have changed names, some have joined, some left (probably, who knows) & there was an interesting topic on http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/view ... 6&forum=15" target="_blank which was about updating the crib sheet as much as possible.

That topic seems to have finished off in a private part of the magic cafe to which I don't have access, been a member since 2004, just rarely, if ever post.

Does anyone on here have any thoughts on this effect, any updates. To be honest I have never been caught out in the dozen or so times I have performed it, but it is something I would like to start doing again & would like to eliminate all eventualities as far as poss :)

This was originally published in Thabbatical which came out in 1994. At the time I noticed that there were a few countries in Europe that were not on the list, so I compiled my own table with all of the EU states in it. I've still got it somewhere...

For the most part, you can limit the choice by asking for a country that they have visited, or perhaps want to visit. Remember that this was originally published for Americans, whose idea of Europe is about eight countries...

It's unpublished at the moment. In the early 90s I wrote a computer program to compile branching anagram tables. I churned out quite a few, and Spice Rack is in the Miraculous Minds ebook that Peter Duffie put out.

There's a chance I might write them up at some point, but it's not going to be any time soon.

There's an online progressive anagram maker here - http://www.cavemanchemistry.com/anagram/ -
:?: But myself, I don't get it, had a play around with it yesterday & no idea what this is really doing :(

I'm afraid I don't like progressive anagrams as I think the method always looks a bit transparent. Although the utilisation of a pen in contimental has a million other applications, which is worth more than the actual effect in my opinion.

You could eliminate a lot of the problem questions by asking someone to think of a country Ryanair flys into. With a bit of acting and presentational skill a branching anagram can work well.

I doubt many would know anything about Ryanair,

It could also be done with cards, each card has a country name on it, get them to randomly select a card, change it many times etc, would also help with the spelling!!!

As said it's an effect I am happy with but if possible would like to be able to add more countries to the list.

Everyone in Europe is familiar with Ryanair. They are the largest airline on the continent. Using them eliminates the Icelands, Azerbijans, etc.

Sadly I have first-hand experience of Ryan Air. Not to derail the thread too much, but be glad you have never used them :)

Well, since the thread is derailed, I will add my two cents. I also have plenty of experience with Europe's biggest airline. I have been treated with respect and courtesy at all times by them. They provide cheap and punctual flights, and their staff are a pleasure to deal with.

That is why millions of us choose to use them every year.
