A while ago I put on a small show for my family with the theme of 'silent' magic. I still had music playing in the background, and I also used some cards with text on in order to initially introduce the concept of the show and clarify some things that would be tricky to convey with mime, but essentially the show was one performed without patter. It was very well received and I enjoyed the challenge of communicating such things wordlessly, so now I'm toying with the idea of doing more magic in a similar vein. This type of performance has been made to work well by artists such as Cardini and Teller, so it's not as though it's a completely new idea, but as it's quite unconventional I'd like to ask if anyone else has tried such a thing and if they have any tips? I'm wondering if I could get it to work with close-up magic, and what sort of tricks would suit it. Generally, though, what have been your experiences with wordless magic?

Some magic doesn't need any explanation as it speaks for its self..... You can pull off any magic trick I suppose with out saying a thing.. Unless your working in a environment that requires some patter etc, like a gig or stage show.??. I always make sure I feed off the people I am around, but that's just me..

It might be worth taking a look at the "mentalist" type guy that was on Britain's got talent this year. It isn't really magic, but it shows how silence can sometimes be used to better effect than words (he didn't speak at all).

It can be applied to close up, but usually not an entire set. Perhaps an effect or two (although for impact I'd say one) during the set.

That said each performer is different. I know plenty of deaf magicians, in fact they have their own magic organization and they don't speak much during their shows.

So, at the end of the day it is all about you and your performance. Give it a shot and see what happens.
