No. It isn't strictly magic but for some odd reason it has always been associated with magicians. Many magicians have used it or have shown a great interest in the subject, Robert Harbin probably being the most notable. I think Bert Allerton used to give little origami keepsakes to people in his close up audiences. A little of it can be quite useful in a performance. There is a novelty value in doing it and the magician appears to be terribly well rounded.

I remember an even earlier TV programme with Robert Harbin. Probably at least 60 years ago. It was called "Mr Left and Mr Right". I am almost positive the magician was Robert Harbin but it never showed his face only his two hands. The idea was that the two hands would slowly make an Origami figure and the TV viewer would have to follow along with his own piece of paper and finish up with an origami piece himself which would be identical to the TV one. I always used to try it as a child but after 3 or 4 folds got completely lost and had to give up.

Someone once told me that Harbin made far more money from his Origami books than he ever did from magic. It wouldn't surprise me.

I'd say it's an Allied Art - like balloon modelling, I suppose.

I also remember Robert Harbin's TV series, and I still have his (hardback) Teach Yourself book, which is rather good.
