cheaper insurance for magicians ?

Postby Discombobulator » Jun 27th, '13, 17:44

There is a company called "Bought By Many" that have successfully negotiated cheaper insurance deals for specialised groups of people through buying in bulk.
There was a feature on them on radio 4 a couple of weeks ago.
They negotiate bulk-buy insurance discounts for specialist groups/clubs such as 'pug owners insurance' and 'horse riding for children' etc.

Typically they can get 10% discount from some of the big insurance companies assuming sufficient numbers of people show an interest.

I thought it might be useful if they could investigate setting up a discount for magician's/performer's public liability insurance and hopefully include hypnosis insurance as part of that discount package. Hypnosis insurance is a bit specialised and not readily available from most insurance companies.

In order to investigate if they can offer a 'club' discount they would like to know which companies currently provide Public Liability insurance (with Hypnosis) specifically for magicians. They will approach those companies and see if any bulk deals can be achieved.

I am aware of Equity as one organisation that provides such insurance, but if anyone can add any company names, and posssibly a typical cost for their insurance (with or without hypnosis) and the typical level of cover (£1M, £2M) etc. then they will see what discounts (if anything) can be offered specifically for magicians.

I will point them to this post if there are several replies.

[mods: This is not spam or advertising. I have no business association with this company and there is no guarantee they can negotiate any deal. I am not aware of any other companies that are offering this service. They do not offer their own insurance, but simply offer a bulk-buy discount from the large insurance providers.]

No worries, it sounds like an excellent initiative and I truly hope it achieves the intended outcome. Last year I joined with a few thousand others via Which? Magazine and 38 Degrees to see if we could get gas/electricity deals and better than the usual offers. It worked and I saved at least £150 a year more than with any deal I could have got on my own!

Rather than put your insurance details on here, you can PM me with the details below.
I will summarise the data, removing names etc. and pass only the summary to them to see if they can get a big group discount.
I will put the summary on here as a guideline price for anyone looking to compare insurance quotes in the future.
(I won't sell your name/details on to anyone. honest !)

Insurance company name (not the broker):
Cost: £/annum
level of public liability cover: £ (million)

cost includes hypnosis? y/n
if no, would a hypnosis option interest you if it was available ?

cost includes props insurance ? y/n
if no, would a props insurance option interest you ?

cost Includes anything else? y/n
if yes, what ?

optional info:
are you a member of equity ?
are you Pro/semi-pro/amateur ?
uk based ?
approximate age: 20 something, 30 something, 40's 50's etc.
approx number of years as a magician/entertainer ?
