When I was 15 or so we got a mentalist to come round my house and do an hours mentalism or what he called 'perceptual psychokinetic performance', but anyway I was stunned at the sort of effects pulling off... naked mind reading, decent book tests, psychokinetic coins/pens and amazing visual pk effects like banacheks pk touch..... even with learning magic and mentalism, no matter how hard I try to think I can't see how any (most) of his effects were performed even now I have a decent understanding of effects. Was it just that his performance was so well rehearsed and he had such a good use of misdirection?

By the way No mistakes or misses that i saw....

Oh sorry! I will depart this thread. When I saw "tight mentalist" I thought it was referring to Paul Pacific who is one of the tightest people I know. He did offer to buy me a doughnut the other day but that was because he thought I would refuse.

i dont want to sound patronising, as we all started somewhere..... but the effects you've described are pretty basic in terms of their method, which is true of most mentalism effects really........ let me assure you the mentalist you hired has no special powers..... just access to a bigger library than you evidently

i wouldnt' say his misdirection is what made the effects... though as he's doing it as a profession i'd at least hope his performance is well rehearsed

mentalism has vast amounts of material to be studied...... personally, i love the works of people such as larry becker, richard osterlind, al koran, banachek, marc spellman.....to name a few..... with the few i've mentioned there you could easily do all the effects described in your post.

just keep studying......... im sure most would offer the same advice......as magic/mentalism is a never ending pit of knowledge and the more you learn, the more you open your eyes to the possibilties at your disposal

Just keep studying and learning the basics. There's so much out there that it's just about impossible to know everything. Don't worry about what other people are doing, the best thing to do is to just enjoy watching their magic and enjoy performing yours.

Buy PMM, corinda, and every DVD ever produced by Richard Osterlind, then, stay at home for two years and I assure you - you'll be awesome!!!!!!!

You were 15? How old are you now? Chances are you are not quite remembering the way things actually went down. Our mind plays funny tricks on us and it doesn't take long. I hate it when people ask me if I can do that trick where they (the spectator) take a pack of cards mix it up and then they throw the cards in the air and one sticks to the ceiling? No I can't because you remember it far more amazingly than I perform it.

I am 20 now, been doing magic for little over a year. I can see how our memory plays tricks on us and how we only remember the effect (rightly so!!). But yeah anyway I have begun studying mentalism as it is the area that really fascinates me so tis all good ! But seriously he done a book test where (this is not my memory playing up) I got to choose a book (ok not great) but i could go to any page I wanted to and look at any word and then close the book. Surely this is the holy grail of book tests?

Perhaps he was really psychic? What was the name of the book you chose?

Pretty basic book test. It is done impromptu and is one of my favourites. While I don't know the name of it because I've been doing it forever. I do remember where I learned it. Tom Mullica. It was on one of his tapes...I guess that would be DVD now.

Not exactly what you mean by sure fire method. Does it work everytime? That has nothing to do with method and everything to do with the performer. The method is the method and it works 100% of the time. It is the magician who can mess it up.

Yeah as does it work every time, but of course that makes sense after all it is mentalism
