Diary effect

Postby storm01 » May 24th, '13, 12:25

Hi

I was just thinking of adding a diary effect to my repertoire and was wondering if you have any advice as to what you think may be the best. There does seem to be quite a few around these days?

Bob Cassidy's got a really nice effect, I think it's in Fundamentals but I'm not 100% sure. I'll check for you when I get the chance.

I use cassidy's as well. However, it does require a mathematical calculation in your head which you'll need to do very quickly. From memory the description he gives of the calculation is incorrect - certainly in my copy! I had to sit down for about an hour trying to work out a new calculation. It's a nice effect that I don't use enough. I know you can use it for strolling but I think it's more of a stage mentalism effect.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, I'm really pleased that you like them. :D.

I love ras el hanout, lovely flavours, aroma and it's great for so many different things. I'll have to blog my Berber roast dinner soon, a fusion creation of mine that uses ras el hanout in gravy as part of a fusion of an English roast dinner with a Berber tagine. Sounds very odd by tastes great. :D

I use Cassidy's too, as described in his Mental Miracles DVD, and it doesn't involve any calculations. I wonder if his method evolved over time to eliminate the need for calculations?

I think it must have. The version I have is a gazillion years old. I use two diaries but I read recently that he was selling a method using only one diary. I thought about updating the effect but like most things you just get used to the method you have?

Are you still interested in a Diary Effect? If so I will make a quick video of my own creation that was published several years ago. I will only make the video of the effect as seen by the audience and not the explanation to start with. I am still using it in my standard 'walk about' set. Simple and only one diary. Not to baffle magicians but a winner for the lay public - which is what it's all about isn't it?
Mark.

Give me a couple of days to get a volunteer so that the effect is shown 'real' and not just a cold demo. Then I will post it. (All very exciting isn't it?) Mark.

Greetings,
Well I must be showing my age. I promised to get a bit of video made showing my Diary effect as someone seemed keen to see it. This I have done by finding an old live presentation and getting a fellow magician to do a brief ‘studio’ demo for me here at home. I now find that I wrote about this with a link to a previous You Tube clip in 2009 in another forum.

However, here is the link to the video just posted and the previous link is shown below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMRaXq04SJs

I can well understand that you will feel I’m a real big head for posting two clips of myself. I will apologise right here and now. Anyhow, if anyone like to give a bit of feedback on the effect that would be nice – not just to tell me what a B** H*** I am.

Below is my previous posting so there is not a lot more to add.

Re my previous postings on the subject. Here is a brief video of myself and my Diary trick. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OruoivNUbRQ It shows the Dairy (held within a passport holder). The effect of a lady looking up her birthday date in the diary and naming the card written on that date and myself proving I knew in advance what date her birthday would be as I had placed a kiss on the back of her 'birthday card' in the pack when no other cards have kisses on them. The laugh climax is when I collect the kiss. I can assure you that I get a lot of kisses that way. I sure need them at my age!

It's not a great or puzzling trick so far as magicians are concerned – in fact downright corny - but as entertainment value for the public . . . . . I made up the perpetual diary on my PC. The Passport cover works fine and brings in a gag. It is, of course, a DIARY TRICK whatever way you look at it. One diary, one pack, no resetting, always ready, self-working. Just what this elderly, lazy magician needs. Plus the perks of the kisses of course.
Pete

It's a very nice effect and looks to be very clean. The effect I use requires 4 force cards which you need to keep about your person. As soon as they tell you their birthday you can hand them a diary and a card in an envelope. It can all then be examined. I like the fact that your routines needs no calculation and only uses one diary. I'm assuming (not fishing) that you couldn't have the deck examined but in a table hopping environment I wouldn't let anyone examine it anyway. You've certainly given me some ideas so thanks very much for posting!! Excellent vid!

Thanks for comments. Originally I made it up with standard pocket sized diary and used this for years. However I went to the effort of making this diary on the computer so I could do the printing on each page nice & bold (better visibility in poor light) and the printing doesn't bleed through the page. I'm not giving the total explanation as I'm sure most can work it out.

Let's just say that the third affect in my table hopping set is the original Jo Riding 'FRED'. No, not 'Phil' or any other variation on the same theme. 'Fred' is only presented for men and not ladies as it doesn't have the same impact on ladies. The Diary effect is basically the same, in that any card can be produced with the kiss on the back - and naturally presented for the ladies only. So briefly my 'Diary' pack is a cut down version of that and, of course, can't be examined. Only a magician would worry about that as you will know! It's the entertainment value that matters. Cheers. Mark.
