Alakazam; an intervention

Postby Ed Wood » Nov 4th, '13, 11:07

First things first Alakazam let me tell you how much I love you, respect you and appreciate all you do for the magic community.
Whenever I visit your shop I am met with knowledgeable, friendly staff. Your internet services are superlative and your own products are always of excellent quality.
This isn't what I want to discuss though. You see Alakazam, you have a problem and I think you need help. I want you to know I'm only doing this for your own good. This may seem harsh right now but you can only come through this stronger.
Alakazam, my friend, you're an addict and your addiction is one of the most insidious of all. You are addicted to e-mails, more specifically advertising e-mails or to be even more specific junk mail. Don't get me wrong here. I enjoy the occasional e-mail from magic dealers. Most send out one a month detailing their new products, some go for 2 a month I could probably accept one a week. Unfortunately this isn't the case with you. It's one sometimes two a day, including Sundays. No matter how you dress it up and try to conceal your addiction you're not fooling anyone. Sending one e-mail from Alakazam and one from (the delightful Peter Nardi) do not count as different e-mails. No matter how you dress it up, you are spamming the hell out of my inbox and it has to stop. No matter how good your products no magic dealer has enough releases to warrant daily e-mails. Hey, guess what? Peter Nardi has released a sharpie through card effect. How do I know this? Because I have received an e-mail a day about it for the last 2 months.
Alakazam, this has to stop or else I will be forced to take drastic action. By that I mean adding you to my junk list!! I really don't want to do this as every now and again you send out a mail that details genuinely new products that may be of interest. the problem arises when you keep sending out details of the same products time and time again for weeks.
I'm not asking you to go cold turkey. How about slowly cutting back, maybe to an e-mail every other day leading to one a week. With the help and support of all those who love you I know you are strong enough to do this.

Seriously, is anyone else fed up with daily repetitive junk mail from alakazam? I'm all for marketing but this is going too far.

Alakazam isn't as bad as magicshop.co.uk...
Every time they send me an email they send me 3 copies of the same email! 2 of these emails will be sent from 1 address and will have the same subject. The other email is sent from a different email address and with a different subject but all 3 have exactly the same content.
I've got used to it and never open them anymore. Same with alakazam, but I always look at the marketing emails which are sent once a week, or less.
I particularly enjoy the lybrary.com newsletter

You can just click unsubscribe and the emails stop.

I know that.
The point is that I like to get updates from Alakazam when they have new products.
They do not have new products every day.
90% of their mail outs are junk. I have stuck with them for the 10% that are not.
All I am suggesting is that they cut back on their mailouts so I do not have to unsubscribe and will therefore not miss out when they have a product I am interested in.
A weekly email is something I would read, a daily email is something I delete without opening.

I have always thought that it is much better to keep communications to a minimum. If you spam people mercilessly (with e-mails or real live junk mail), I think the recipients pay less attention to each item and you probably lose sales because things get missed in all the dross.

My sentiments exactly, very rarely did I read Alakazams, I have now unsubscribed for that very reason.

All the best

Same here, I have their facebook updates so that'll do. I'm cracking down on this kind of stuff filling my inbox with pap. Most of it is the same things every time anyway with maybe one different (not necessarily new) product at the top.

You know what? I'm beginning to form the same opinion. I've lost count of the number of "E2" emails I've received now...

Me too, and I still don't know what it is or want to buy one, or do I......no, I don't.

I feel much better now because I thought it was only Hocus Pocus out in California that did this. I recieve at least 2 emails a day. One is a list of stuff he has in and the other is a super deal or special which is 3 days only at buy one get one free, or 50 percent off on a specific effect. Not to worry 3 days later he has another.

I don't really mind them but it does get a little on the annoying side.

Think I had 3 E2 mails in 3 days.
My breaking point came on Sunday. I was sitting down to Sunday lunch with my family. Heard my phone ding to indicate i had an e-mail. When I checked it later I discovered it was Peter Nardi's pick of the day!
Marketing e-mails on a Sunday are just too much. I have finally lost patience and unsubscribed.

Clearly a case of over egging the pudding. Obviously there is no real respect for the customer other than as a potential cash cow. Somebody at Alakazam has far too much free time on their hands..... :D
