Derren Brown-Infamous:Question

Postby Anjorno » Dec 12th, '13, 22:09

As anyone ever been to this show or any over of his live productions and been a volunteer or know about him.
If so then I have a question.
the instant trance he uses, does it work on everyone or as he ever had a time when he as be made to look a fool!
I have heard that he uses confusion tactics that cause anyone to be susceptible to the trance.

Hey Hey,

I went to see the show earlier this year and then found out (Via facebook) that a friend of mine had been the night before and was on stage as the gentleman who was hypnotised and then asked to draw a picture - he drew a boat and after a LONG conversation (over a few beers) I came to the magical conclusion that he was not under any sort of 'dual reality' effect and that he genuinely did everything onstage that night as I saw the following night - he said that he honestly felt the objects in the box and the object drawn by his friend in the audience was the very object he felt - his mate drew a boat (VERY generic looking simply childs drawing) and Richard said that he felt what seemed to be a Ship in a bottle style boat, loads of detail, loads of really tiny boat parts. Either way, he felt a boat in the box, even though there was nothing there :)

I dont think that any 'confusion' or anything like that was used, and I noticed when he did the poker routine on our night that he swapped the participant as the original guy he picked would have CLEARLY been trouble ... years of experience mean that you'd notice someone like that early on and wouldnt allow them to fudge things up for you :)

When did you see the show? what were your thoughts?

Dan

Short answer, no.
Slightly less short answer, no, it doesn't work on anyone!

Longer answer, if you're interested in really understanding then it would be worth learning about hypnosis and what a "trance" actually constitutes; it is very rarely like what public perception of it is, which is part of the trick really!
The term "instant trance" is a bit of an oxymoron in most cases; although one could argue that just about anyone is always primed for a trance state simply by being aware of what hypnosis is and believeing you can do it!

Have a look at the thread at ftopic26902.php, might give a few clues as to how to go about such things.

As there doesn't appear to be a trance state (after fifteen years working as a hypnotist, I am confident stating that) then it is unlikely Derren can induce one.

I saw the show.... I think your over thinking the drawing effect. and as far as the original question, Audience management is the key. Just as it is the key in all aspects of magic.
try to relax, and watch the stuff for what it is.. and remember....... THIS SHOW IS GOING OUT ON TOUR AGAIN IN THE NEW YEAR, AND NOBODY IS SUPPOSED TO BE DISCUSSING WHAT THE SHOW CONTAINS.. Respect the performer, the team, and the future audiences and keep mum..:)

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....
