Hey Everyone,
I'm currently in Melbourne for the Aus Open Tennis and guess who was playing in the local theatre? THE ILLUSIONISTS !!! Got in at 4pm, booked the ticket (H26, damn god seats) for the opening show that night at 7:00pm
First off, the live show is AMAZING compared to the TV show recently shown in the UK ... in my opinion the show being given a presenter in the form of Steven Mulhern RUINED it.
The show I saw had David Walliamson as the 'trickster' and featured a 'mentalist' who copied a Derren Brown routine (with an A-Z), copied the idea of having a badge on his jacket, copied the finale from Enigma (with the boards with letters / numbers on them) and to top it all off had a box on stage with a prediction in it which ended up being wrong ... AND the woman he got on stage said (when asked 'did I give you any clues as to what to select from the A-Z) 'yes, you told me to pick 3, but I picked 6 and it was wrong' ... I dont know what to say, that was the WORST part of the show and sort of put a downer on it for me; a copied routine, copied patter AND it went wrong and she outed him as telling her what to pick.
On a side note, Dan Sperry, WHAT A GUY !!! His performance of 'smash and stab', his dove routine and his polo from neck were out of this world! As well as getting to see Kevin James Live (and he is lecturing at a local magic shop on Monday), the STUNNINGLY beautiful Jinger Leigh ('the enchantress') and David Walliamson perform his world renowned 'Rocky Raccoon' routine - I feel that I have seen a true masterclass of how to perform magic to a crowd of people and literally have them eating out of the palm of your hand
The show is back on tour in 2014, America and Europe, if you get a chance to see this, PLEASE GOD DO IT !!!
9/10 ... as I said, the mentalist routine spoiled the show for me else it would be a smoking 10/10
