DO NOT make your own using a chapstick. That is not the usual method and you'll get yourself and your cards in a right mess. You also couldn't let the spectator handle the card. Its best to buy one from a reputable dealer (or contact Lawrence above, from what I've heard his are exellent).

The Mark Wilson book as suggested by Tony is a great place to start your studies and is very cheap. Compared to its price, you'll be pleasantly surprised at the amount and quality of its content. If you use the search function at the top of the page you'll find plenty of information on this classic tome.

The Coin Unique you have ordered is an exellent prop (Eddies gimmicks are of the highest quality). It can be used quite effectively with very little skill - but if you combine it with some of the things you'll learn in the Mark Wilson book you'll have some really good magic at your disposal.

Let us know when your stuff arrives and I (and I'm sure others) will be more than happy to point you in the right direction and help with ideas for effects using your new cards and coin(s).

Good luck on your journey and welcome to the craft - and to TalkMagic.

God no, don't.
Make your own, Yes
Use chapstick, No

If you want to make your own get a can of roughing spray in.
The problem there is that'll cost you over a tenner*, whereas I'll put an ID through your letter box for £6

*but you'll be able to make half a dozen with your first can

Ahhh right, I was just being slow there tho I likely shouldn't admit it...just cottoned on to the fact that an ID is infact an ID :D ooo but it gets edited out for some reason?
I have looked into this book and it seems to be raved about everywhere, it's now on my wish list.
I can see how this could become very addictive, but I better wait for my first lot of stuff!

There are several of these, some to preserve a bit of secrecy, some to edit out profanities, and some the Modsters did for fun one day when we had s*d all else to do.... :D

I don't know what instructions are included with these, but here is quick tip for ending with an examinable coin:
Keep a regular pound coin in your left pocket. After you've vanished the penny and shown your hands empty (you can allow them to hold the coin for a short while here-its almost impossible to tell its gimmicked), put the coin away in your RIGHT pocket. Then, if anyone asks (they probably won't), you take the real one from your left pocket and let them examine it.
Also, think about hiding duplicate pennys under beermats etc for a "reappearance"
Have fun!

As mentioned several times already, ID, and Mark Wilson. With this book you can have as many wow's as you like.

Providing you're willing to put the practice in of course...

Hey folks, got my stuff! They're great! But the coin does have ever such a slight rattle to it tho its pretty tight. Unfortunately the long and short deck aka Svengali has a slight misprint in the shape of a white strip on the backs of just one of the cards making it look like a gimmick card which ironically it isn't! I wondered about sending it back but it was 3.99... It'll be good to practice with.

Thanks for the coin tips, I've already been practicing my slights so I can get 1p from a spectator and do a sly switch :D it's a lotta fun figuring out different routines.

If the mark is on one of the long (regular) cards just replace it with a matching card from another deck if you have one. Or just remove it and its neighbouring short.

Here are some ideas to get you thinking with your coin, the workings should be obvious from the descriptions.

Coin Through Glass - two coins are placed in a horizontally held glass. An empty glass is held underneath and one of the coins penetrates the glass and lands in the bottom one.

Coin Through Table (nice pub trick) - two coins are placed on a beer mat on a solid table. The coins are covered slowly with the magicians right hand. The left hand is shown empty and placed unde the table. One of the coins penetrates the table and beer mat.

The old grab a coin trick - I'm not sure if there is a name for this but it is based on the old idea of quickly grabbing a coin from someones palm before they can close their hand - two coins are placed on a spectators palm. The magician explains he is going to hold his hand about a foot above theirs and is going to grab one of the coins before the spectator has a chance to close their hands. The magician makes a grabbing motion and the spectator quickly closes their hand - and will usually smile because they are so sure your hand never came near theirs and that you have failed. He opens his hand and there indeed is one of the coins. The spectator opens their hand to see the other coin.

Coin Across - two coins are placed in the magicians left palm and the hand is slowly closed into a loose fist. The right hand assumes a similar position and both hands are held apart. The left hand makes a tossing motion (not of the vulgar kind) towards the right. One coin travels invisibly to the right hand.

All the above can be done with no actual sleight of hand.

PM me if you want any further details on any of these.

If you need any ideas for the Sven deck I'll write a few of them up as well.
