Tricks of the Psychics

Postby Mandrake » Aug 2nd, '05, 16:36

Did anyone else see this? It was in the Daily Mirror last Thursday (I only buy it for the knitting pattern reviews) and ran thusly:

TRICKS OF THE PSYCHICS

Clairvoyants rely more on everyday techniques than any supernatural powers to make predictions.

These include "cold" and "hot" reading, and noting body language.

Their job is made easier because clients are willing to be convinced of their fortune telling talents and only recall the accurate statements, says a report in the New Scientist.

Psychics "cold" read clients by making general statements on health, family or work.

Whiles searching websites like Friends Re-united or even rifling through belongings are forms of "hot" reading.

Whilst none of this will be news to most, I think I'd be very unhappy if I thought such charlatans were rifling through my belongings to make themselves look good. There again, I probably wouldn’t go to such people in the first place unless to see what trickery they get up to!

Friends Re-united is an absolute bible for a mentalist of this sort...

A friend of mine was invited to do walkabout magic at a corporate do in London. He found out the name of the 'big cheese' that was organising the event and typed her name into Friends Re-united and 118.com and managed to get the info for the following effect:

He forced three cards on her, a 2, a 4 and an Ace, and tried to figure out why she had 'picked' those cards. He re-arranged them and after some moments of confusion, she realised that every day she travels along the A24 to work! Spooky! Also, from friends re-united he got the name of her next door neighbour as well as the name of her little sister's first pet dog.

Powerful stuff that you could only know if you were a mindreader...

This week's New Scientist is well worth buying for its special about deception.

I could go along my friends blogs and get some info

but there one girl taht forgets eveything she says to me so when I repeat them another time she's really freaked out.

I do eventually tell her that she told me the other day and I'm not that much of a psychic.
