Howdy. I'm in La La Land of Los Angeles, CA. Born in Nova Scotia, I'm on the verge of becoming semi-pro. There's a ton of opportunity for magic here in LA. My first performance, at age 14, in Canada, ended in the total failure of each and every one of my tricks - water spilling, rabbits not appearing out of hats, cards dropped everywhere. This before a crowd of 200 at a Boy Scout Jamboree, with my father in attendance, trying to crawl under his chair no doubt. The event taught me the power of practice!

Padraig,

It is much better to spend hours of practice first and not make a fool of yourself. But hopefully, you have learnt from the experience.

Yes, big time. It's a classic beginner mistake to be all excited about having "learned" a cool new trick, and then running out prematurely trying to pull it off. I'm now extremely circumspect. A week mininum before going public. The risk is just not worth it. I have to really OWN a trick inside and out, do it without looking (if possible) before showcasing it.

Welcome!
Good luck on the pro--
Join a local magic circle..My circle used to meet once a month for about 2 hours (about 6 of us).At the end of each session, someone would have the oppurtunity to run through their routine..
