Kreskin

Postby Piers » Aug 3rd, '05, 20:43

Need to get this off my chest.

In the olden days, when there were only 3 TV channels ( bliss ), and our mother was at work during the school holidays, on ITV we used to watch ...

... I think it was called The Amazing World of Kreskin. A great programme. Happy days.

Anyone else remember it ?

Piers.

Yes absolutely! My first sacred brush with the impossible world of mentalism. The Amazing Kreskin. He's published some great stuff, too.

But more significantly: badly dubbed, black-and-white Robinson Crusoe, The Flashing Blade, White Horses, Why Don't You! The Galloping Gourmet! Endless sunny days with nothing to do but play out on a bike with a peg and cardboard in your back wheel with a big gang of friends. Everyone rushing home to watch something exciting on telly then back out in the sunshine again. Comics on a Thursday, penny chews, and years to go until skool again.

Being a grown up is rubbish.

When I'm old, I want my pension in mojos, fruit salads, rocket lollies, 99s and space dust!

Tomo,

Agree. You have hit the nail on the head.

Blackjacks, The Golden Shot, Ann Aston, Early closing at the sweetshop on Wednesday's, Catweazle, Flying Saucers, Cor, Beano, Free Gifts etc ...

And much prefer it when our children play outside, and make a house from a blanket and clothes frame. Now that IS magic !

Best,

Piers.

Nothing reminds me of eternal childhood summers like chewing a wooden lolly stick, with a joke on it.

And does anyone remember an ice cream called a Saucy Tanner ?
It cost ... a tanner.

And magic tricks ? Those great stink bombs, or smoke boms that you lit, and created huge amounts of probably highly toxic white smoke. Great !

I bought a smoke bomb and took it to a field to let it off. It scared the pants off me! I thought I'd set the field on fire!

Does anyone remember those tubes of goo you could get, where you rubbed a bit into your fingers and smoke-like filaments appeared when you pinched them apart? It was probably carcinogenic, but great fun when you were ten! Skool banned it, chiz chiz.

Thinking back, our local joke shop seemed to sell magic tricks more than real jokes (hand buzzers, itching powder, fart powder, etc.) If there's one good thing the Internet has given us again, it's niche shops like that. You couldn't set that sort of thing up on the high street these days and get it to pay.

For those who want to get right on with the nitty gritty http://www.the-joke-shop.co.uk/showcat.asp?category=59 and scroll down a bit.
(And don't spend too long staring at the Naughty Nurse outfit)

Agreed, being a grown up is rubbish! Not only did you get your comics on a thursday, but you used to get FREE GIFTS with them aswell! 10p to spend down the sweet shop was plenty, and if your gran came and gave you a a 50p piece you felt like you could buy the shop! Days cruising around on bikes, and making a den in the woods! Being out all day from 9am till tea time! So sad that our kids cant enjoy this freedom that we once had :(

And we had proper skateboards with Sky Slalom trucks and Hang Ten or Kryptonic wheels and a couple of risers slung under a Benji Board or Freestyle deck, not the rattly things they have nowadays.

Ah yes, Brookside with real swearing! And the red triangle films. You'd stay up half the night watching some old french flick in the hope of seeing a flash of forbidden n*pple.
