Making Excuses

Postby Big Dan » Aug 3rd, '05, 12:08

Apologies if I'm asking a popular question but i can't seem to find it anywhere.
most of the stuff i do appears to be impromptu, eg magic with everyday items, card tricks etc... so to the person you are doing it to it appears that there is absolutly no set up at all.
though we all know that this is rarely the case, so when someone comes up and says, oh can you do that trick and you're not set up, ho0w do you decline without disappointing.
moreso how do you do this when you have absolutely nothing to show them instead.

Learn some real impromtu stuff and then you won't need to decline.

i do know some but even then you'll need to have the right things on you which you won't always have, and some people just really nag you to do a certain trick.
i have a certain friend in mind here.

Learn something with a coin, then you should always be able to do something.

Always carry a regular deck of cards. So many options with that.

a) Like the Scouts - be prepared!
b) Check out Karl Fulves, Nic Einhorn and other books for self working impromptu magic ideas - all available at most book shops and magic stores. Carry a TT, some coins and perhaps some matches in case you can't borrow them from the specs.
c) Don't be afraid to say no - you should always be in control of what, when and where you do your magic or you could make a hash of things and be left looking rather foolish. You're not a puppet who performs on demand, you're a Magician and Magicians have to be control freaks!

Tom Mullica has a DVD set out called 'Impromptu Magic Made Easy' I don't have it myself, but I have heard that it's a good investment if you want to move into the impromptu, magic with everyday objects kind of field.

Here's a link to it... watch the previews and see what you think.

Hope this helps,

Erm...?!

95% of the tricks I perform are totally impromptu. In fact, the only things I do that aren't are NFW and the BCS stack. You should really move onto some truly impromptu card magic.

For example, although we may consider it simple, try this one.

Have a card selected. Control it to the top. Snap your fingers and show the top card wrong with a DL. Give them the top card and tell them to snap - tada!

Also, for moments when you're caught withough anything, borrow a 2p coin. You can do a lot with that! (Retention vanish and produce from their ear with a Downs Palm or Goshman Pinch is always a good one!).

Just some tips,

Kati

if i can make a quick confession, i've been out of this game for a few years now and i've forgotten pretty much everything i used to know.
and now I'm annoyed at myself for ever leaving and working my way back in.

hehe, it's starting to look like maybe its just me with this problem

... but if that doesn't work, there are quite a few routines you can perform with an ordinary watch.
