non-metal safety pins?

Postby snapdeus » Aug 11th, '05, 01:54

Hey guys
I recently bought myself a Raven, and its a great trick! The first time that I successfully performed it in front of a mirror, even I thought it was magic! :)
Anyway, to get to the point, I am trying to perform it with short sleeves, which I am finding pretty difficult. But I think that it might be a lot easier to do if plastic safety pins were used (if they even exist).
Does anyone know if such things exist? Or if some other kind of solution could be used?
cheers
W

PS I tried to explain without giving away any of the secrets to the Raven, hopefully you guys understand what I'm (badly) trying to say :)

You should get the Raven DVD which will tell you how to use the raven with short sleeves and other ways of setting the raven up.

Are we talking about the same Raven as invented by Chuck Leach? If so, sleeves are irrelevant to the operation - or they should be if it's 'installed' correctly. The materials of construction of the pins are also not an issue with Raven as far as I can see. The video mentioned above repeats the written instructions but Chuck demonstrates the moves and set up in details so it's worth buying the vid if you intend to use Raven a lot.

This is the same Raven as normal, but I find that the metal pins used in the brake tend to stick to the main component of the Raven, and when using the short sleeve method that is outlined in the instructions, it can get caught up during performance, and could lead to detection when trying to pull them apart
I am thinking of buying the DVD when my paycheck comes through, but just thought that modifying the brake would allow for a much smoother operation.

Ah! If you don't mind a bit of garment damage, how about a wooden (or plastic) cocktail stick? At one time proper haberdashery shops sold genuine brass pins which wouldn't invoke the problems you describe. Dunno if they still do them but you could ask. Alternatively, would it be practical to locate the items using the supplied pin then over sew them with ordinary thread and remove the pin? It would make it a more permanent job but might be worth it.

If you got it from Penguin, take a look at the forum as there is a "belt loop" method posted there, which I use (couldn't get the hang of the other...).

In north america, you can somethines find safety pins that are made of a copper/bronze..ish type of metal......non metalic. I will look for a couple around the house, and if I can find one at home or at my parents, I can mail you a couple!
