Tricks for Beginners.

Miracle Rabbit by Albert Goshman
£5.95 from ://www.emagictricks.co.uk

The Effect.
The spectators are shown a perfectly ordinary sponge ball that is made to disappear by placing it in your pocket. Naturally the audience are not too impressed with this and are quite quick to tell you that it is just in your pocket.

You remove it from your pocket and tell them that as they weren’t very amused with the disappearing ball you will attempt something a little more impressive. Then, right before their very eyes you change the ball into a 6” high sponge rabbit.

Review.
This isn’t going to be every ones cup of tea as not everyone likes sponge ball magic, and also the primary audience is ideally kids. However, if there are children in the audience (preferable young children) then I would have no qualms about recommending this as very fine easy to do trick. It’s great getting the kids screaming that the ball is in your pocket only to then go on and flummox them with the ball to rabbit change.

I would add though that in my opinion the ball that was supplied with the trick was probably a little too small. This wasn’t a major problem but as I already had other sponge balls of various sizes I just substituted one of my own.

Difficulty. 1/5
1=A cat (or a trouser wearing Aardvark) could do it, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

Easy. Although I have seen what I think is the same trick on www.magictricks.co.uk (specifically at http://www.magictricks.co.uk/prodshow.asp?code=35) advertised as having a difficulty level of 3/5. For the life of me I can’t think why this would be classified as such. I certainly don't think it is using the suggested method of performance, so I can only think that the trick on this site uses a more complex variation.

Rating. Effect/item: 6/10, Quality of goods: 7/10, Value for money: 7/10
I would like to add though that when performing for kids I would give this a higher overall Effect/Item rating.

Bottom Line.
It’s cheap and is small enough to carry around. Being sponge it can of course be very small, but I wouldn’t recommend keeping the rabbit too squished as it loses it shape (and ironing it is not an option!!! Trust me on this). I like keeping this one handy for all the young kids, however in saying that, it is unlikely that I would perform it to anyone else.

When I was demonstrating some of my magic at the weekend to family, my niece and nephew (3 and 5) thought it was amongst the best magic I did (but then maybe I should take that as a criticism of the rest of it).

hmmmm im noticing an increasing trend of using the analogy "a cat could do it...." why doesnt anyone use aardvark????????..... hehe

Yes - I should have given Seige a little credit for the inclusion of cats. 8)

However Mog - to suggest an Aardvark could do this trick would be utterly ludicrous. Come now, please try to pay attention. I clearly mentioned in the review that at one point a ball is placed in a trousers pocket. How many Aardvarks do you know that wear trousers? Not many. Thats how many.

Well, Alvin the Aardvark did I guess. Hhhmmm

ok. you win. :)

The carefully chosen 'cat' analogy was based on the following feline attributes:

1: Cats are very curious, intelligent and elegant
2: Cats are meticulously clean and tidy
3: Cats are very easily pleased (just touch their spine and they're in heaven)
4: Cats have nine lives - like David Blaine (he's only got 1 left, praise the Lord)
5: Cats are able to contort their bodies in bizarre ways (no comments about 'if I could do that, I'd never leave the house' references, please)
6: They are naturals at lapping - especially milk
7: They are inherently associated with magic (witchcraft)
8: Their tongue is rough and smooth - surely proof of a real magician
9: They have a conveniently placed pencil sharpener beneath their tail
10: They purr when they are content (no relevance, but it was nicer to stop on 10 points rather than 9)

So, for all those reasons, I chose NOT to include Aadvarks as an analogy.
(Hamster came in with a close second - due to their built-in toppit-style cheeks - brilliant for vanishes and productions)

2 guys walking down the street... they pass a cat licking its "ahem.." first guy says wish i could do that... his friend replies "well i'll hold its head for you"...
