Suggections for beginners.

Postby wingman04 » Aug 15th, '05, 03:34

I think a couple of Mods, if they have the time,, should make a sticky for beginners. Since so many new comers always ask what they should get, if its worth it, like me  and people get tired of answering the same things over and over. In the sticky, there would be a list made by them of some books, DVDs and tricks they should get for specific magic.

For example one postfor card magic would be:

DVDs: Born to Perform, Ammar,s Card Miracles
Books: ROyal ROad to Card magic

I think it would save a lot of people, alot of time. :)

As the MODs said, would newbies read it, you can tell that some new people never read things like that. When i joined the forum the first thing i did was check the rules and information section so i knew actually was not allowed etc.

A list would cause the old Book's Vs DVD debate again

I don't think it would really re-ignite a debate. It is just a list for beginners to peruse when deciding, it's up to them to choose. Then they can tailor things for themselves. Not sure how to explain myself... Anyway, the mods could even make it so that nobody can post in there, it could just be a page with a huge list of reccommendations(sp?). Anyways, thats just my opinion.

I think the review index alreayd does this job - it has ratings, prices etc - even the classics are marked in red.

I think this debate occurs when those that prefer to recommend books to beginners tend to put down Dvds. If a book is recommended but no comment made about how it is so much better than a dvd cos it's cheaper or contains more information or currently on Magic Bunny cos it's harder to learn from, then I don't think there is an issue.

Now you see, I always felt that the opposite was the case, the debate seemed to arise when those who couldn't learn from books said that it was an inferior medium as descritpions are harder to understand than watching someone do something. Amazing how people are always able to blame others when the fault should be equally apportioned isn't it!

(PS, no offence meant ht, but I think it is best to avoid attributing something like this to just one side)

Fault? Hehe... Noone's at fault! It's just that some people find it easier to learn from, and therefore prefer, one medium compared to another. It's personal preference and shouldn't be attributed to someones fault. I think the whole debate is a bit silly. :D :P

The beginners sticky sounds like it might have been a good idea, though I think the review index already does that job and more... and probably better too! I use it quite alot and find it extremely useful! Whoever came up with the idea, well done to you! :D

(Incase you wondered where to find it... it's a sticky at the top of the reviews section of the forums!)

By fault I meant the recurrent, circular discussions which get no-where as we end up repeating ourselves, not the opinions themselves!
