My one-handed shuffle

Postby mark_c1975 » Aug 18th, '05, 09:51

OK, I got the XB DVD a couple of days ago, so I thought I'd post a vid of my progress with a tricky move I've always had problems with:

http://media.putfile.com/One-handed-shuffle

This is only after 2 days of working on it, but I think it shows that the teaching style on the DVD's is well done.

Not bad, eh?

I'll post the slick version in a couple of weeks, when my left index finger has got some of it's skin back!

I've edited the link...

I've noticed that, since adding fanning powder to the cards, they don't weave so well at the end of the shuffle.

Has anyone else had this problem? Are there any suggestions to get around it, or should I just not use cards with fanning powder on them?

Cheers,

nice

Postby mr wiggles » Aug 18th, '05, 15:02

very nice so far apart from near the end the cards don't seem to "flow" very well, but it's nothing a little work can't iron out. i look forward to seeing the "slick" version :D :D

They flowed well until I went and put fanning powder all over the deck. Once it's slick, I'll film it with a nice new Tally deck!

Thanks for the input.

That's quite good. I recommend you try learning to do it without using the pinky on the side of the cards but keeping it on the short end.

Some nice work... mainly the speed needs a bit of work but that's nothing a little practice won't do.

Noticing that you're moving onto more into XCM Mark, so I recommend you getting a bunch of cards. I think magicbox sells them the cheapest in bundles. I'm gonna buy a pack of 12 Tally-ho fan backs or multicolour bikes next time for around £20!

Steve, I think that it's teached with the finger at that place...that's atleast how I got it explained in one book(not sure wich one it was)...

Anyway, a really nice shuffle (I wish I could learn that one...can barely do it with bridge cards...but as I do all my other magic with poker cards it's to no use :( )

But I guess u need some more training to get it really smooth ;)

It is taught that way on the XB DVD, using the pinky and the thumb to weave the cards like a Faro.

I can do it faster than that, I was kind of slowing it down to try and display the technique. I will post a faster one, more real-time. I'm still being careful of the cards edges.

XCM is fun... I don't want to move into the field totally, but I'm using it to learn a few killer moves (like the shuffle) for the purposes of showing off!

:D

Here you go... sped up a bit with a nice new pack of red Tally's.

I paused a bit to show the weaving of the cards, and at the end proudly show off my blistered index finger.

I found the newer cards weave better at the end, compared to my powdered Bike deck.

Now I'm trying to do it with both hands simultaneously! My poor fingers :(

It's just that I learnt on the instant download from PM to keep the pinky there.

I guess I'll have to wait for my XB to arrive.

Now it's better :)

May I ask how big your hands are?

If it's possible, I think you should try and make your waterfall longer. I'll try and learn it when I get XB. You'll probably still be better because I'm a slow learner.

I know what you mean about the waterfall part... I've figured that bit out. You just have to separate your hands a little slower, so the cards fall themselves, rather than being squeezed.

The inside of my left index is a little sore as I have been doing the shuffle constantly, whilst watching TV, etc... This is how I get a move down, just repeat, improve, repeat again, till I can do it. The cards are gripped by the index finger there, and they do rub. I guess I'll get a bit of tough skin!

My hands are fairly big. I posted a pic of them in another thread somewhere on here. From the bottom of my palm to the top of my middle finger is about 2 cards, longways, end-to-end. Does that give you an idea of size?

I think instead of practicing whilst watching TV or something, you can dedicate some time to just practicing you XCM. Maybe even like 15 minutes a day could improve your XCM greatly. Whilst watching TV, you mind isn't focused on improving the technique.

This is just a theory and I'm not too sure about it. I find it hard to dedicate some time just to do it, but I like to listen to some relaxing music while practicing.
