Where to start with IT?

Postby Mahoney » Aug 22nd, '05, 01:50

I have searched and read lots of information on IT but I am still very unsure where to start. I don't really know what I need (what kind of reel or what ever presuming there is one?!) to get started. I just want to know what the basic IT system I should get is. I also need instructions on use etc.

If you could point me in the right direction it would be most appreciated.

Get the hummercard. Always impresses. Although obvious, it is fun to do. Do it while you're walking around in a shop or shopping centre and you'll bound to impress people. (Or people think of you as weird)

There should be lots of good IT advice on the forum. Hummer card is really good. If you want to start with an ITR then you may want to consider the Michael Ammar thread DVDS. Lots of good advice on them. I use a Kevlar ITR, costs a bit more but very good.

You could also start with loops, they are very good and easy to use. You can perform a self-cutting deck, a moving fork etc. There is a book about loops called "animated miracles".

Some people like to use a UFC, these are very expensive but very good.

BAD advice.
I would recomend getting some books or dvgds on thread to show you what can be done with the stuff.
Its to easy to expose thread by doing it badly.
My top advise, if your realy not sure about the stuff, then dont use it.

IT Practical Backgrounds

Postby Allen Tipton » Aug 24th, '05, 11:01

Having lectured on IT for some years, I have always advised beginners to purchase The Art Of IT by Jon Le Clair (£22) His system is simple and safe. The 160 page book includes, 24 effects,& material to use as well. Also his Thread & Putty Set (no instructions) at £12. All these , and a lecture video of Jon le Clair can be obtained from Davenports. I have found his thread and putty to be the best I've used for Close Up Magic. Only after using this should you graduate the very detailed michael Ammar's , 3 DVDs. Then you go onto the ITR's (IT Reels) but only buy the original Sorcery Shop ones. They also do 2 or 3 videos which give you effects and more important details on repairing thread breakages and setting up the ITR's

Stephen.

I was interested to hear of your kevlar ITR and was wondering if you could share some of the advantages of this, over the standard plastic ones that seem to be the commonly stocked item. I was wondering if it's just a matter of better quality?

Can you indicate where you can get one and how much it cost?

Thanks
