Card wrappers

Postby Renyats » May 13th, '03, 11:53

Does anyone manufacture the cellophane wrappers bicycle cards come in? I'd like to be able to produce a chosen card from a seemingly brand new deck.

I've tried cigarette wrappers but a bicycle deck is just too big. Are bridge cards a little smaller?

Renyats

Go to your local Florist shop. They have clear plastic wrapping sheets for bouquets of flowers, which if cut carefully and folded neatly, will mimic the original packaging of the Cards.
The best glue I've found to use is VERY small amounts of polystyrene cement, which you can get from craft/model making shops.

It does not discolour the nice clean plastic, and dries relatively quickly... but LESS IS MORE is the key here!

As for the sticky label which seals the deck, go to your local stationers and buy a sheet of inkjet printable self-adhesive labels and print your own!!! I know, it sounds quite difficult, but bear with me - I'm a graphic designer. I simply mocked up the blue label on my computer and printed a ruck off.

On an A4 sheet of self adhesive, you get about 60 of the labels, then trim them with scissors.

What you get is a convincing deck of 'new' cards. If you practice a bit, you can get them at the stage where your spectator can actually unwrap them for you!!!

Thank you very much.

The only problem I can now forsee, judging by my attempts to wrap Christmas presents last year, is making it look neat and convincing.

Cheers,

The best tip I can give you for the wrapping is to carefully de-construct an existing pack.

You can pre-cut a load of pieces ready for assembly, by using the original as a template.

Pre-folding and scoring helps, too, especially at the top and bottom.

And remember - not too much glue!!!!

I see now that you can get the labels and acetate from http://www.cards4magic.co.uk/ but I'm going to give your method a crack. Thanks again

Indeed, and there are also a couple of US sites where you can buy rolls of the stuff - but the florist wrapping is pretty good, and you can get it free (if you're cheeky!!!)

The advantage of buying the acetate sheet from companies such as cards4magic is that it is often pre-cut to the right size. Although it does not take a rocket-scientist to work out the correct dimensions!

Mmm...

Seems like a lot of hassle.

Plus, it's usually the case that you'll rip the 're-cycled' wrapper off, at which point you've ruined it.

The florist wrapping lets you put decks back into wrappers before each gig, and once you're used to it, you'll become a dab hand.

Plus, the practice makes you a wiz at wrapping Xmas pressies!!!

The sticker thing is just an authenticator... if you've got either an amateur or pro in the audience, they'll know it's there.

Same applies- if you recycle the original, it's only good once, then gone.

Advice: if you intend doing this every show with more than one deck, get some wrapping and some stickers.

Don't make a big thing of producing 'an unopened, unused' deck, just get the deck out, tear the wrapping off, chuck it away - the actions speak louder than words.

Also, most gaffed decks (ID, Brainwave etc) arrive without any outer wrapping and, if you need to show they're completely innocent (oh, yeah!), then unwrapping them suggests all is abpve board.
