Mr Clean Coins Across

Postby katrielalex » Aug 29th, '05, 07:42

Hi all!

A while ago I filmed Mr Clean Coins Across, which you can find on my website here.

I wondered if anyone had any comments on this as I quite like the effect...

One thing I noticed is that I have my hand at the wrong angle as I start to put the coin in G*****n for the second transfer. Hopefully a spectator wouldn't see this though as they would look from above...but it's hard for me to put a camera at the right angle.

It's a nice effect. The same one as shown in Gregory Wilson's On the Spot.

You've got the sleights all down and I think you've almost mastered the effect. Just one small point. You took a lot of time before making the second transfer which I think makes you seem nervous for making the sleight. So just a little bit more fluid and it'll all be better. Everything else was great!

Ah...Sankey claimed it as his. Odd.

Thanks!

I'll work on it. I'm trying to diversify from cards a bit...

This isn't exactly the same as the Greg Wilson effect but I aggree they are similar. One major difference is the ending. Wilson uses a different way of transposing the last coin.

All in all a really good effect and very wel performed, technically speaking. I aggree that it needs to be a little bit more fluid but not from a technical point of view. Your patter seems a little wooden and could do with spicing up. Try and build on each transposition. Make it seem harder and harder each time. Do the first one as you did, but then maybe ask a spectator to hold your wrists the second time and then move your hands really far apart on the last time. Also at one point you said "See them go? You should have." I'm not having a go at you but that line is so condesending and if delivered like that to an audience it will really put them off. All of a sudden it's their fault that they didn't catch you out. That's not magic. Also, you might want to generally keep your hands further apart when you do it. They looked a little to close for comfort, if you know what I mean.

All the best,

I'm not one for coins, I must admit... so well done on getting some coin sleights down comfortably - just a quick note, though, before you perform the first transfer, you tell the specs what you are about to do.

Isn't that a big 'no no' as far as performance is concerned? As soon as a spec knows what you're going to do, the element of surprise disappears, and the process of 'figuring out how he does it' starts.

Otherwise, I'm dead jealous that my coin skills aren't as good as yours. :)

Good points G and Z (:D). I agree that I need to work on my patter. I was struggling to find something to say for most of the effect.

This is a problem I know about in a lot of my magic, and I'm trying to fix it. It's not easy - I'm not creative like some of you guys .

Well done

I loved the trick and you pulled the palms off very well and at 14 you have a bright future ahead of you.

Regards

D.

Not to worry, it's something that you will learn over time. I really found theory books helpful when trying to evaluate and strengthen my tricks. In particular Strong Magic by Darwin Ortiz and Absolute Magic by Derren Brown( and here).

Ortiz has alot to say on the subject of presentation and very thoroughly deconstructs every aspect of a performance.

Brown's thoughts are more geared towards creating strong, memorable, emotionally linked magic but are very interesting nonetheless.

If you want some more ideas just let me know :) .

it might be my impatience with this computer, but i thought you said that the coins were going to travel invisibly, then you ask if the specs saw them move, then say that they should have. Also I find it funny that you are having a conversation with yourself, but I do it all the time, with or without camera. Good work, though, you mentioned that specs would see it from above, i would find it difficult to see as you kept your hands quite low through the effect. You pulled the slights off very well (which means that i too am jealous), as for creativity, see how many crazy people you can find in the city centre, and talk to them, dont mention magic, but listen to how they view the world. GoldFish's suggestions still overrule mine though...
