Warming up?

Postby Sam:monkey fist » Sep 30th, '05, 13:36

As a musician (Guitarist to be Precise) that gigs regularly, I know only too well that performing with cold hands can lead to all sorts of problems Tendonitis, R.S.I, carpal tunnel syndrome etc..
So often (not all the time though admittedly naughty boy) I have good warm up session before i go on stage.

Well this got me to wondering should we as magicians also warm up before going on stage. I mean some of the tricks we perform with cards coins etc do take some dexterity and unconventional hand positions which may lead to aching hands.

Has anyone ever felt an aching and wondered what was the cause? I think this mainly comes when learning new moves especially multi packet flourishes. My advice is to take a rest if this aching occours and if it persists go to a doctor and get it checked out especially in an age when we seem to be constantly on computers.

You could also look up Greg Irwin and his website, and read his finger warm-up exercises, as well as his finger fitness stuff.

Watch some of his videos... he's pretty good with his fingers!

Cheers,

I learnt a really nice hand massage on XB. Again, as Mark said, Greg Irwin teaches it. He's really good with his hands as as Mark said again, check out his site! Plenty of free exercise videos.

Sit down for between 30 and 45 minutes in a quiet and dim place if possible, relax, and visualise your performance going to plan.

Works wonders!

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!
