Joining a magic club

Postby Johnny Wizz » Oct 6th, '05, 16:35

I have made the move at last and I am joining my local magic club. The first meeting I am going to in a couple of weeks is a Close Up competition night so that will be a really interesting start and give me an idea of the level of talent in the club.

I have been told that the club doesn't have auditions or an entrance test. On normal club nights they have a theme and as it was told to me "everybody does a bit on that theme"

Is this what other clubs do? If so what will be expected of me? I am really looking forward to joining but have real worries about performing in front of real experts, people who will know how I am doing the trick!!

Any advice from experienced club members will be very gratefully received

John,

After speaking to a couple of magicians, I am finally pulling my finger out and joining my local magic club too. Next Wednesday will be my first night at the Zodiac Magical Society, and it's a lecture evening.

The club has no formal interview, but you do have to be recommended for membership, so you have to go along for a while and get yourself known to the members.

I don't have any stories or advice yet, but as we're both joining clubs at roughly the same time, perhaps we can compare notes?

:)

There are few good links that have already discussed this. It might be vaulable for you to take a quick look around (do a search on magic clubs).

HTH,

Vic

heres an old thread from when i was humming and hawing about joining a club HERE. Since then i HAVE joined a club and i must admit i think it was definately the right thing to do!

Computer games don't affect kids; I mean if Pac-Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music. - Kristian Wilson, Nintendo, Inc, 1989..

Thanks for the link Mog, very helpfull.

As somebody who has only joined this forum recently I found it reall interesting to read posts from a couple of years ago written by some of the senior members here now.

I found it reall comforting to read how lotss of you who ppost so confidently and knowlegably on here were just as nervous at the thought of joining a club for the first time as I am.

I can now look forward to my first meeting with more confidence.

And yes Mark, it will be good to trade experiences. I look forward to hearing from you, my first meeting is not until 25th October

I can understand the nerves you might be feeling ... but I'm sure that its really nothing to worry about.

At the end of the day, is TalkMagic not just a magic club or sorts? i think that regardless of ability, so long as you have a genuin intrest in the magic then magicians are very welcoming of new members.

I've been thinking of joining my Sussex Club, does anyone know of anyone who is a member of that club?

Thanks,

Rob
