Actually, I don't think that's the reason - I think that Google would be happy to have as many people as possible.

Sending out invitations in this way is a very clever marketing strategy, because it makes you wait for the invitation and then if and when you get one, you feel as though you're in a select group.

As an example, I don't need an orkut invitation, nor would I use one - but I still want one, probably just because I can't get it!

Remember, Google is actually offering invitations to all and sundry if you text them - they just don't want to make it too easy to get one.

I'll add an extra condition though - you have to have at least 20 posts (so you can't sign up just for the Gmail).

In hibernation but half awake - will stick my nose in every so often!
