opinions of magicians who expose magic

Postby milzy » Oct 22nd, '05, 15:04

i have sent this type of message in lots of times and each time it keeps on going "mysteriously missing" so in the latest one i would like to state
that im not asking for people to expose tricks or anything like that!!!!!!!!

so tell me wether you think revealing the secret to magic tricks is bad
good etc

also whatever you do
don't expose any magic tricks in this conversation please! i don't want it deleted again

also it says in the poll it stops jumping out of buildings

i ment to put it stops people jumping out of buildings

Actually, your previous thread wasn't deleted, it can be found here: http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/sutra55072.p ... ght=#55072

Also, the Magician Talk are of the forum is for talk about magicians rather than just magicians talking so I have moved this to Miscellaneous, perhaps that is what happened to the last one!

I think that there are two different questions in the first voting option.

If a magician wants to reveal the secret of his own work then surely that's up to him? However, if he's revealing someone elses work then that's a different matter in my opinion.

I am not sure if I agree with you Dat......
Simple reason, if you explose a secret of your own magic routines or tricks, you most likely expose a basic principle, or a way of thinking in magic. Let's say I want to explose a magic trick, vanishing a coin... and the secret is that lets say i use some sticky tape or something (ok, hope this is not considered a expose here in the forum), this would most likely expose alot more than just that trick, as it also will set thoughts into a layman, how magicians work.... Remember, there are still people out there, that really believe a magician is a person with special gifts :-)

I see where you're coming from Rune and yes, basic principles, slieghts etc. perhaps do belong to the wider magic community as so much else can depend on these.

However, that's not the point that I was trying to make. What I was trying to get across is that if you invent something then the general principle is that you have the rights to do with it as you see fit, which is why I thought that there is a second question in there somewhere :? (got myself all confused now  ).

I don't have a problem revealing secrets to fellow magicians, just to Laymen.

Whats the point in telling them?

This made me chuckle as I have just had a friend visit who did not know I perform magic. I showed him a trick with four blue backed card which turned (one at a time) face down. I then turned all four face down to show him all red backs. His jaw nearly hit the floor and his only words were "Was that real magic ?" ... Result !
