Howdo folks,

Just a few words to introduce myself.

I started messing with cards when I watched Channel 4's 'Faking It' show, with the (I think) Physicist being turned into a magician. Being fairly ham-fisted I soon got bored, but the seed had been sown and for the past couple of months I've been working on it again, this time with a couple of decks of Bicycles (so easy to work with-joy!).

I'm presently working my way through 'The Royal Road to Card Magic' (very slowly), as I gather it is a pretty good start.

I confess now that I'll be more of a lurker than a poster, but if anything comes to mind, I'll get in on here fairly sharpish! Everyone seems nice and helpful from first impressions...

Cheers all,

Chris. (AKA Doctor Death- if you ask I might explain..._

Evening Chris,

Welcome to TM, i also started as a Ham Fisted Lurker ... i've come a long way since, you'll get into the hang of it i have no doubt.

Explain a little about the Dr Death title.

What sort of tricks, effects and routines have you been working on?

Cheers,

Rob

The Doctor Death title:

I'm a baldy- partly natural, but mainly down to wet shaving (I always said I'd shave my noggin as soon as the hair started to go, and I did...).

I have a large, old, Crombie overcoat that I wear in the winter, and some bright spark in the pub decided I looked like the grim reaper, hence the 'Death' part.

The 'Doctor' part just got added somewhere along the line, I'm not sure by who (or should that be 'whom?).

If a 'non-local' is in the pub, when someone says something along the lines of 'Fancy another pint, Death?', or something similar, you can imagine the looks I get, especially when you consider I'm 6'+, weigh 16 stone and am fairly 'bikerish'.

Anyone who knows me, is well aware of the fact that in reality I'm soft as tripe, but apparently I look scary, or so I'm told. The wife of a mate of mine still thinks I'm scary, and nothing my mate says can convince her otherwise... I look in the mirror and see a bearded baldy, but there you go.

As for tricks, I'm still getting to grips with some of the basics- card control, false shuffles/cuts and all that. I'm a slow learner when it comes to this sort of thing, but I'll get there.

I can watch magicians now, and although I often know how they do their tricks, I usually can't see them doing it (practise makes perfect), and am still amazed, if only by their sheer skill.

Fantastic!

Go Watch Dr Death ... we make a habbit of posting our videos in the 'File Sharing' section of the boards.

I'm sure you will find a few you will be impressed with.

Hi and welcome to TM. I think if we're honest we probably all were ham fisted when we started

Hi and welcome.

Hamfisted is good sometimes. An untidy shuffle can cover a multitude of sins!

Hi and welcome to TM - perhaps we should have another category, HFL - Ham Fisted Lurker, as we've probably all been through that stage at some point. Some of us (such as yours truly) have stopped lurking but are still Ham Fisted!

Since your interests was started by the Faking It programme, you might like to know that there was quite a bit of discussion here about the programme and Kevin McMahon (aka lowercasekev) gave us a bit of background info before and after the show. One of the links is http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic4308.php&highlight= and if you click on his Profile then check all his posts, you'll see the rest of his comments.

Thanks for the warm welcome folks!

I'll try to contribute, but as I said, as a newbie there's only so much I actually have to say, little of it useful!

I'll do my best, and if there's a query or comment that comes to mind, I won't hesitate to post it...

Chris.
