TM Magic Contest?!

Postby rcarlsen » Oct 28th, '05, 16:40

Hi

Wouldn't it be kind of interesting to arrange contests here on TM? Different weeks or month could have different genres of contests.

- closeup
- card trick
- card routine
- c&b (cups..)
- scene/stage
- impromptu

I bet we could contact dealers for sponsoring winners etc.

What you think?

That could be solved in several ways.

1: MAIL
Each contributor sends an email to a moderator of a forum/thread. This email contains the video, with information of your nick. The moderator will upload all the stuff on a spesific date or something and add a poll where people can vote on the contributors.

2. UPLOAD
Pretty much the same as above, but there is no email being sent. Just using a upload forum, where contributors can add their link to the file or similar. Moderator creates a poll in another thread, closing the main thread on the deadline.

... and there are other ways to do it as well.

Sounds like a great Idea Rune ... i like it alot.

If we held it on a monthly basis you could do all sorts of cool things.

The winner could be upgraded to a special status/rank in the forum and have there own unque little banner above there Avatar.

you could also Converge all the vids into a montage after the judging for people to download.

Would be a great way of making people put in some serious effort and post some amazing videos, and opening it to the public vote means it would be fairly judged.

I love the idea rune.... nice idea. Maybe it needs to be in the 'Forum Requests' topic rather than here.

It is certainly a good idea. I think it was briefly discussed previously but nothing ever happened as no-one ever come up with a category or any rules. Once that is done the whole thing becomes fairly easy to run.

I like the idea of a competition winner status, however, we have limited control of these things at the moment (as can be seen by the recent loss of all status icons) so it may not be implementable.

I too think that this is a great idea and one worthy of further consideration

So it seems like we should come of with some ideas around RULES and some ways to PRIZE the winners.....

would this be a purely magic for magician's contest or would the entrants be expected to film with an audience. If so how do eliminate stooges? If not, what's the point?

Those are just a couple of considerations to take into account. There's alot to think of but if you can work through the issues it could be feasible.

As I see it, it's all up to the guy wanting to participate. If the "contest of the month" is "Card Routine", just show a card routine... If you use audience or not, is all up to you. Of course, another month, we could have "Best live show", which of course sets the scope of the contest...

So ultimately it's a contest among magicians for magicians?

YES

This is where anyone can vote for anyone. Of course, no one can stop you from voting on yourself, and having friends voting for you, but that's a chance we need to take. I have been into several contest in such forums like this (phpBB), with good success. The problem with friends-voting (such as next door neighboors etc), can be handled with ip-tracking. Anyway, let's not make the idea a problem, let's make it happen.

Such contests makes magicians go into themself, and create something filled with more quality, practice more, and be better doing magic. We are doing them a favour, and it's both fun, challenging and interesting.

Don't you think?

I agree completely Rune ... i love this idea, i dont think there is pettyness on the forum that would end up with people getting friends and family to vote.

I'm sure there wouldnt be a problem .... we do need to think slightly about the rules of the competition, and slighty about the criteria for basing your votes on, but on the whole; people know what they like and will vote for thier favourite.

I hope we can see this come to fruitiion, i would also like to see it have its own catagory on the boards rather than just sitting in thread a thread.

Now ... in my opinion the posting of the clips needs to be controlled by the mods, so we could run a mothly rotar as follow.

1st of the month, competition open

15th of month ... all submission must be made before this date. this could be a link PM'ed to the mods.

16th of month ... mods's create poll and link all video's in a list, maybe with a little detail about the clip and the name of the entrant with them.

Last Day of month ... polling closed and the winner announced.

This is only a rough outline but i think that is the best way to control things, it ensures that all entrants get the same ammount of voting time, would also be good if we could arange it so as clips cannnot be modified once voting has started.

If the mod's can't afford the time to manage this then I'm sure you could elect the power's to someone like Rune or Myself to deal with it.

Thanks,

Rob

Yes, I aggree, to a certain extent. However, if it's magicians judging a magic competition, then they will ultimately be judging different aspects of the performance than a lay audience would. A magician by nature will pick up on things which a lay person will not. A routine could blow a lay audience away but do nothing for an audience of magicians. Therefore the end result of a magic competiton judged solely by magicians will not be reflective of the magical performance in a productive way. And I am of the opinion that there is no point in conducting a contest if nothing productive comes of it.

Maybe this is the oppertunity for things to be different to the 'File Sharing' topic ... people can currently go in there and post thier video's if they want, opening themselves for constructive criticism.

In the new contest format i think things would be alot more light hearted, you dont go in there with your technical hat on ... you can in to be amused, watch other magicians perform... just because i know how all the david blaine tricks are performed doesnt mean i dont enjoy watching his performance .... i love watching other magicians perform tricks. nO matter what level they are.

This is more of an R&R or Team Building event rather than somthing serious where we can ridicule one anothers performances.

Maybe we dont even need the section to allow people to post conversations in it, maybe a simple poll is all we need.

At the end of the day GoldFish ... i think the forum would benefit from a segmant like this ... if you dont want to take part in it then there is no presure ... thats the beauty of it.
