Hi Everyone,
As a kid I used to love working out new tricks mainly with cards but when I started work I got out of practice and the only cards I now owned were credit ones. Then after seeing Derren Brown on TV and eventually live on stage my interest was rekindled.
So if anyone out there knows of any magic clubs or keen amateurs in the Forest Hill area (SE23) who could help teach this old DOG (Designer Of Graphics) a few new tricks then I do get in touch.

No Need for people near by .... this forum provides a wealth of information on performing cards.

The idea behind the forum is not to give away the secrets, but to support and advise one on what and where to learn.

If you are only just getting into Cards again, it would be good to know your current ability.

I would reccomend getting some good books and DVD, firstly we need to know what sort of things you are into though!?

I would say I have quite a good grounding in card magic mainly gleamed from the book Expert Card Technique and a number of other books purchased from Davenports or Kaymar magic over the years as well as ofcourse the obligatory Paul Daniels magic set!
I recently got Derren Browns The Devils Picturebook video which is his a selection of his card routines and though I do enjoy his mind reading stuff I think it is a shame there aren't any opportunities to see this stuff live and close up!
I hope I don't sound ungrateful towards the usefulness of this site I think it is great, but I have always had to teach myself with the help of books or videos and would now like to find a group local to me where I can share ideas and learn new methods over a pint ot two.

Sounds as if you have a firm grounding which makes life easier ... glad to here you got your Derren Brown Video, i heard that its becomming tougher and tougher to get a copy of it.

I personaly use DVD to learn as well as the odd book, I'm not sure what level you are at, this reccomendation might be a little below you, but we make a habbit of reccomending it to any one getting into cards and that is "Oz Pearlman's, Born to Perform Card Magic" availble from www.penguinmagic.com

There is a bunch of stuff in the cards section on that site, anything from Oz is worth looking into, also stuff from Jay Sankey wouldnt be a bad investment.

I have been looking at that video and though I think I know most of the classic moves he mentions, I learnt all these from books and so it would be good to see them actually demonstrated on screen. I also discovered sankey through penguin magic and really like the simplicity of method behind his tricks, creating brilliant routines around some basic but clever moves. I also have become a big fan of the demos on penguin magic it is great to actually see a trick before you buy it as a lot of magic sales blurb is often quite exaggerated. The one thing that does frustrate me is the fact you can't preorder when something is out of stock so I have to keep logging on in the hope that they eventually will restock Super sharpie!
What stuff have you bought recently that you would recommend?

Hi Paul,

I have stacks of stuff ... invested in a few instant download's from penguin that i would complain at ... although that is the expensive way of doing things.

If you fancy somthing a little showy, that isnt really magic then look into flourishing, there is a load of stuff around, i have just invested in "generation extreme by brian tudor" I'm just waiting for it to arive .... take a look in the Reviews section, there are stacks of full reviews on everything and anything in there.
