Blimy ... just trecked all over town into all sorts of shops, all selling complete pony of cards.

I have ended up (as i am VERY deserate) buring a set from WHSmiths ... I'm just braking them in at the moment, its like playing with a wet bar of soap.

At first glance they dont seem to bad, dubbed as "casino quality" they have a reasonable snap to them, almost a little slippy to fan properly at the moment ... the design and cut is clean and reasonably attractive ... i'll keep you posted on them, maybe write a review.

As a ham-fisted newbie, perhaps I'm being a bit presumptuous here, but whilst it's nice to use Bicycles etc. (now I've got used to the 'looseness' of the deck,I love them), surely practising with 'cheapo' cards as well can't be a bad thing.

I say this as I'm betting that once people know you're on the handy side with card tricks, they'll want to see some, and whilst you may have your own deck in your pocket, if they wan't you to use their deck (to make sure you're not 'up to' anything), you can almost guarantee they won't be a premium deck. In the UK, you could probably lay a bet on their deck being smaller too (is this the 'bridge' size I keep seeing being referred to?).

See where I'm coming from? Whilst all those gaff decks are printed on bicycle stock, when it comes to using a straight deck, if you really want to prove your salt, then a borrowed deck is one of the best ways to prove your skill. I know most of the miserable swines in my local would be very suspicious if I only ever used my own cards.

Not that my skills are fit for public consumption just yet...:)

As I gradually get better and faster at card control, I'm constantly going back to older, decks in both sizes so that I'm really comfortable handling decks in any state. I've even kept the early ones, where bends in the cards make smooth handling difficult.

Swift update: I called into Birmingham's Costco yesterday and they had 50 or so bricks of Bikes on sale. Current price is £10.33 including VAT for 12 decks, just over 86p a deck. At that price you could almost use them to play ordinary card games!

So true - the Costco ones still have the US pricing labels on showing $13.49 a brick which is about £10 or so by the time you've converted at current exchange rates, added freight costs over to the UK, Customs and Excise Import Duty and then the dreaded 17.5% VAT.

This thread inspired me to get a couple of Tally-Ho decks to compare. To me, they feel slightly "crisper" in an overhand shuffle than a new deck of Bikes, whereas individual cards feel slightly more flexible. Odd, that. I think it may be the edges, which feel slightly rough. They certainly make more noise during bottom control exercises (oo-er, missus!)

ASDA used to stock and sell them but other members have mentoned that they can't find any in their local stores - even down by the alcohol area which is where they used to be sold.

Asda have stopped selling them but I just can't stop visiting the alcohol aisle. What can the membership suggest (hic)?
