The classic Change Bag (bag on a stick) has it's place and is nearly as ageless as the Cups & Balls. Then again, like the Cups & Balls or Ball & Vase, etc. what makes the Change Bag work best is how comfortable and proficient the performer is that's using it.
I just purchased an
"Irish Change Bag" from Steven's Magic, which is a bit different than the classic version mentioned above, it looks more like one of those Satin bags you'd keep a deck of Tarot Cards in...which is exactly what I'll be doing with it... those familiar with Docc Hilford's $1,000.00 Seance manuscript can probably figure out some of the other things I'd use such a device for. I bring this up for one very simple reason; everyone is talking about all these fancy, overpriced switching wallets, etc. when, for $25.00 they can have an innocent looking cloth bag that does the same thing and seems like it belongs... at least in my case and in how I am using the device.
The other reason I'm expounding on this wonderful little gadget (and older magic methods on the whole) is because their time has come in some instances. That is to say, it's been so long since they've been seen or employed steadily, that they are "new" again. In the hands of a clever performer such elementary devices, especially those that aren't as "obvious" as the old bag on a stick version of this particular critter, will throw even a learned mage off your trail if you use it right.
BTW... for those of you wanting to do some Mental Magic in your shows... Guy Bavli has a nice little See Thru "Fish Net" Change Bag that's quite clever. It's a bit steep on price but it's a dynamite device for forcing objects, names, etc. I don't recommend it for a straight Mentalism show, but for a Magic Show in which a bit of Mental Magic is being added, it's perfectly fine.
