The Holy Grail of Mentalism

Postby The Mentalist » Nov 23rd, '05, 06:55

Mentalist worldwide has been seeking the "Holy Grail of Mentalism" for years, I mean, the REAL THING. Mentalists have been seeking the perfect "impression" device to secretly obtain information such as drawings, words, etc. Clever magical inventors have come up with all manner of gizmos and clipboards to achieve this "Holy Grail" of Mentalism. Up until this year however, the goals of REAL TIME, ON STAGE, WITHOUT ASSISTANCE and LOW LIGHTING conditions have never been realized - or available for purchase.

Now, from the creative mind of the Extremely Mental James Biss comes a new approach to the most pure form of clairvoyance...design duplication! This is a brand new, real time, impression device (not a "clipboard") and it comes complete with a ten minute design duplication routine that's both entertaining and mind boggling! It uses a magnetophoretic display panel technology with a few nice subtlies to make it a terrific edition to your arsenal of mind reading magic. There are NO real lighting constraints and there are no magnetic clean-up issues as with other approaches on the market. You can clearly see what they've drawn or written - even in the kind of limited lighting that most working performers have to deal with. You can easily reset the board right on stage!

I highly recommend this.

Why? Could you give us your feelings on it, an idea of price and availability etc, how it has gone down when you have perfromed it.

The review template posted as a sticky will give you an idea of the kind of information we tend to need.

Call me suspicious, but this sounds an awefully lot like an advertisment vs. "Review" of a product.

In the years I've been in this business I've seen this kind of boast (hype) around products (especially imp pads) and NONE have ever lived up to the claims. A solid product of this type would have been shared with at least four or five noted "names"/critics in the industry who could disect the item and confirm, if or not it's as good as the advertising claims. As a writer I submit rough drafts to folks of whose opinions I value (they aren't going to be nice to me just because we know each other, they will give a brutal, honest response) but this is standard practice and it isn't only how you get the words of honest endorsement on a product, it's how you tease the market and create interest.

As far as imp pads are concerned the better units I'm aware of to date still come from John Riggs.

Then I assume you haven't seen Scott Creasey's ;)

(although I should point out I haven't seen John Rigg's)

this sounds an awfully lot like an advertisement
It does to me as well. If it isn't then the product blurb has been copied and pasted here rather than offering an independent Review or assessment, using the suggested Review template as far as possible, which is what this section is all about.

Ok, I didn't read the Sticky part of this category,...
Ok folks, this is the FULL info about it:

Name: Impressionable Mind

Price: $59.00

A third of the audience clairvoyantly draws the simple images that you're thinking of and drawing on the board.
A freely selected member of the audience draws a more complex picture with their back to you - which duplicates one that you're "transmitting". You then reveal your drawing before they do.
You draw a different image, that a different spectator is challenging you with. The image exists only in their mind. They draw after you've committed your impression to paper.

Rating: 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

Hope u like it!

Ok but what you have just given is an effect, what I'm interested in is the device itself. You've certainly hyped it up as a breakthrough etc. but said practically nothing about it. For example is it a note pad? I don't even know that. Have you personally used it during performance, what have you found are the pros and cons. Can it be used with a regular pen/pencil? etc
The kind of information you have given is the kind that we would get off the sales page of the product, what we are looking for is a bit more in depth comment from someone that has actually used it. Also at the very least a link as to where the product is available. If you haven't used it then that's fine but in that case you should make that clear.

Regards

Ethan
