This is what me and my friend MagicJ' do as our part time magic job!
We are always entertaining at kids parties and even did Brownie Camp up in London this year. (2005) - 100 Brownies, guides and staff with us 2 boys and 1 other guy. Twas nutty!
We have found that simple tricks work best with kids.
We include ventriloquism and escapology too but as far as magic is concerned we stick to the following simple tricks....
Change bag
Torn and restored
Devils Hankerchief
Cut and restore rope
and basic stuff like this...
Once we tried our own routine. Displayed was a large board covered in wrapping paper. Stuck (blue tak) to the wrapped board were 4 large jumbo cards. J' took a normal pack of cards from pocket and asked the child to select 1 card.
J' then turned over 1 card and said "Is that your card" He is wrong. We made a big fuss over this. lol He continued to be wrong for all the cards stuck on the present. "What shall we do. The magic trick went all wrong" Finally we got the kids shouting etc and the child opened the present. Stuck on the board, was his card. (jumbo size)
It worked quite well. Unfortunatly we havent used it since due to various reasons but hope to use it again in near future. Its such a basic method and a lil remembering.
Kids love to move. If you play something like guitar i strongly reccomend you include a song that they can join in with. As this isnt magic related i wont go on anymore about this but its an idea for your kids shows.
