In honesty, the Devil's Picturebook is something I can't get tired of at all.
Firstly, there's the performances. Derren is almost faultless. The execution of the routines are almost perfect. I can watch and watch again, and the speed, fluency and intimacy with which he performs is masterful - and worthy of repeat viewings.
Secondly, there's the explanations. Derren makes sense of every move he does. He allows you to get up-close and personal with almost every thought. It's far less like watching an instructional video - and more like having a friend explaining it to you.
Thirdly, there's the passion and enjoyment. Derren exudes charisma - and his love of the stuff he does is evident in both his performances and explanations. It's great to watch a master magician love his work, rather than seeing the old "yes, this is what I do" type of attitude. But he also gives his explanations in an almost timid, modest way - playing down the actual awe being felt by not only those of us watching, but also his close friend Peter Clifford, who oversees the performances and explanations alongside Derren on the video.
And finally, let's not forget that this is the career Derren chose to leave behind. He moved from gorgeous, innovative card magic to a more lucrative and successful career as "that bloke on telly who does amazing telepathy".
This video is three hours of pure magic. Real magic. Performed as a snapshot of what he did before he became Mr. MindControl.
And, whatever he does next, he's already done more for modern magicians than he needed to. Nice one, Derren.
