Equal/Unequal Ropes

Postby Beardy » Dec 8th, '05, 19:58

I personally really like this one, so decided to write up a review having not found one on the site...

The Effect

One at a time you show three separate pieces of rope. There is a very short piece, a medium length piece, and a long piece. You fold the three pieces, make eye contact with your spectators, and open the ropes out again to reveal that all three pieces are now exactly the same length.

You continue by restoring the ropes to their original different lengths. As an ultra-clean finish you toss them out for immediate examination.

The effect can be repeated as often as you like. Nothing is used up. There are no gimmicks to hide. The effect can be performed as a close-up effect, or on the largest stage!

Cost

£1.61 from penguin magic (I know some of you won't buy from them any more, but I feel that this is the cheapest)

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

There is one sleight, however I feel that it needs to be given a 2 as it is very easy

Review

I love it. It has fooled many a person, and it is a trick that you can repeat to them...just not really more than twice. A word of advice when practising though...actually practise more than you feel you need to. The first time I performed this trick "on stage" I messed it up, having picked the ropes in a different order to what I was meant to when showing the ropes to be the same size. I ended up dropping one of them :S PRACTIUSE PRACTISE PRACTISE! I talk from experiance with this trick!

Overall

I like it. here are my ratings...

reaction: 8/10 (after examining the ropes - even better if you perform in short sleeves)

Ease of the trick: 8/10

Worth the money? 10/10 (at that price you can't go wrong!)

Overall: 9/10

Buy this now :D - or learn it :D - id recomend buying it with the ropes as it is cheaper than buying the instant download...however the instructions, although very simple to follow, may not be as good as the download - though don't take my word for it as I don't personally know :D.

Once again - very good trick. I love it, and would appreciate any other comments on different ways that you (personally) use the trick.

Thanks for reading!

Love

Chris

Hi Blapsing Beard.

A nice review but you have probably missed the review as this is commonly known as professors nightmare. See here:

http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic93.php&highlight=professors+nightmare

It's a nice yet easy piece of rope magic that is utilised in many other rope routines such as fibre optiocs and one of my personal favourites, Joe Riding's 'roped in' routine. I tried to find a review but turn out that I couldn;t find one. I'll post one later on.

Is Fibre Optics the same as Three Ropes and a Baby?

If you're tempted to buy/learn this off the back of these reviews, then make sure you have a look at Karl Fulves' Self-Working Rope Magic, too. You'll be playing with rope for hours, and have a whole new set of effects under your belt.

That is my good deed for today. Thank you.

That's a great title Zack and it's full of great rope magic for the beginner and intermediate level. There's much more here than you'll get on a DVD or a download and probably much cheaper.

Equal-Unequal Ropes (or Professor's Nightmare, to use the American and correct name) was invented in the '50s by Bob Carver, based on a two-rope routine by Hen Fetsch.
Magic dealer Gene Gordon of Buffalo, a founder of the International Brotherhoold of Magicians, wrote the patter that become "Professor's Nighmare", allegedly about a professor's trying to figure out how it worked.
This is NOT in the public domain; how Penguin got hold of it I don't know but I'm willing to bet that they never paid Fun, Inc. of Chicago (the current holder of the rights to it, I believe) for it.
Sure it's inexpensive -- but is that any reason to rip somebody off?

cheers,
